    What is prepping?

When you hear the word prepping, what comes to mind?

    An apocalyptic end-of-the-world event?

Being in a crisis, like earthquakes, tornados, floods, or fires?

Living in the woods in a bunker?

Stockpiling endless amounts of food and water?

    Gas masks and guns?

While prepping often conjures up images of cracked concrete landscape littered with garbage and decay while soldiers scavenge for scraps wearing gas masks, prepping is, at its core, about finding the means to survive in an unfortunate situation. In the 1960s, money began to inflate more than it ever had in the past and the ongoing threat of nuclear warfare between the United States and the Soviet Union caused the public to think more about individual prepping.

The 1970s brought about talk of socio-economic collapse and an oil crisis. Many books were penned on retreat groups, food storage, and securing your home against warfare or civil uprising. Society’s main fears related to food energy shortages, feminine, and the collapse of the economy. When the fear of nuclear war with the Soviet Union surfaced in the 1980s, the first wave of survivalist movement peaked. During this time, the main concern was with nuclear war and building country retreats during times of unrest. The Y2K computer bug triggered intense fears of computer hacking, security compromises, and data breaches.

Predictions were made that banks would fail and planes would fall out of the sky, so society built bunkers and prepped their homes for an incoming computer-induced apocalypse. On January 1, 2000 the world realized Y2K did not have serious implications because hundreds of hours of computer programming work had gone into fixing the issues. But to this day, threats still linger and society must be prepared for the worst. September 11, 2001 brought prepping back into the light after the terrorist attack in New York. Other tragedies such as the outbreak of Ebola and swine flu and
