Describe your residence and its occupants as it relates to protective or defensive decision-making.

I live alone in a second story condo in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s an urban setting with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Police response times in this area are lethargic, to put it lightly. A year ago, my alarm was tripped, and I received a notification on my phone. I arrived in just over 30 minutes and was able to determine the alarm was due to a technical glitch with the system. I called off the police even before a patrol car ever showed. As vital as police are to society, we need to rely on ourselves first.

How does your home/neighborhood environment affect your choice of home defense/bedside firearm and defense items?

Because I live alone, there are many risk factors that are alleviated. I don’t need to place considerable concern for the other rooms in my home as I am the only one here. I do consider the neighbors below me and in the buildings around me. Overpenetration of a projectile through walls and moving in a tight environment are my primary concerns. For this reason, my bedside firearm is a stock Glock 19 Gen5 in 9mm. I use standard velocity 124-grain Federal HST hollow points for my defensive ammunition. Given the tighter confines of the rooms and hallway, a pistol is the ideal choice for me. Any long-gun or shotgun configuration would be too cumbersome and present too much risk for over penetration. Maneuverability and handiness are critical for me.

Describe each of your home defense/bedside items

Glock 19 Gen5

This is my EDC and home defense go-to. I keep the pistol on the nightstand loaded with a 15-round magazine and 1 in the chamber. A spare 17-round magazine accompanies it. I like the reliable, utilitarian nature of Glocks.

TRUE Utility flipper knife

These knives are affordable, light, low profile, and made in the U.S. I choose everything based on utility rather than trends and fashion.

Browning Blackout 3V rechargeable flashlight

I love that this light is small enough to fit in a pocket and strong enough to fully illuminate average rooms. It uses rechargeable RCR123A batteries and has variable brightness options. It’s very handy, affordable, and effective.
