    Killing Them Softly

The figures on the computer blurred. Jimmy rubbed his eyes and tried to bring everything back into focus, but his eyes wouldn’t cooperate. No point in straining them. He linked his fingers behind his head, and, as he leaned back, his antique leather office chair rocked to accommodate him. He swung his legs up on the corner of his wooden desk and closed his eyes.

This is the life, he thought. But it’s quiet. Too quiet.

Babe: open the window, he said.

Yes, Jimmy, a female voice purred. He liked the sound of that voice – almost Brenda Vaccaro, but smoother, like Lauren Bacall: Diana Lang’s voice. Diana Lang who, with Doctor Yon – her ex - had tried to kill him a couple of years ago. The same Diana Lang who had manipulated him into various…compromising positions. The fact it was her voice might have implied things about Jimmy’s character, but he wasn’t the kind to go for counseling. With his eyes closed, he could almost see the smile on those moist lips; the mischief – or was it murder? - in those blue eyes.

He heard the sound of a window sliding up, and the faint sounds from outside increased in volume. Cars rolled down the street outside Kaczmarek's. Pedestrians’ heels clacked on concrete sidewalks. An occasional honk. A whisper of conversations out on the street. Pleasant, not raining, and not hot yet; typical for May. A nice day to be outside for some surveillance or to work the streets, but that wasn’t what was paying the bills today. Well, at least he could bring some of it inside.

    Babe: breeze.

Yes, Jimmy, she replied. It was worth coming up with tasks just to hear that voice.

A slight breeze came from the window. He heard more sounds from outside. A car door creaking open. The distinctive rumble of a hemi engine starting up.

Hemi? No one around here has a hemi except…

Jimmy nearly fell to the floor as he scrambled up from his chair and ran to the window. On the street down below he saw his orange Cuda, with some unauthorized individual barely visible through the windshield.

Hey! Get out of my car! Jimmy shouted, then regained control.

It was foolish to expect to be heard over the sound of the Cuda’s hemi through an open, second-floor window. Fact was, a real window would have been too expensive; Jimmy had opted for a flat screen imitation fed by an external mic and camera and dressed up to look like a window (even the breeze was rigged.) No way that the thief could hear him.

Jimmy watched helplessly as his prized muscle car jerked into gear and then stalled. Good – the perp didn’t know how finicky his Cuda could be on start-up. Jimmy ran for the office door; if
