    Hard Times

    Enough already! Jimmy gasped.

He squeezed his eyes closed against the sweat dripping into them. The plastic straps were rough and chafed against his wrists.

I do not think you really mean that, Kaczmarek chided.

No, really! That’s enough pain, thank you.

I will be the judge of that. What do you know? The big, muscular Pole stared down at him. You think this is pain? I’ll show you pain.

Jimmy opened one eye and watched his tormentor push some buttons on the device, then clenched his mouth shut against what he knew was coming. The stress on his arms increased; he could almost feel the tearing inside as he tried to resist the pressure. A high-pitched whine escaped through his running nose.

    Kaczmarek laughed.

Jimmy groaned through gritted teeth. You’re enjoying this, you sick bastard!

No need to be rude, Jimmy, he replied. You know it did not need to come to this. You keep doing things the way you have been, and you only make it hard on yourself. And then you wind up here, strapped in, struggling …

It was bad enough to have to endure this torture, Jimmy thought. Did the nagging really have to come with it? He wanted to say something to shut him up – anything to stop this incessant droning. But he was too busy trying not to cry out from the pain.

…whining like a little girl. Go on – tell me what I want to hear.

Cut it out, already, Jimmy gasped through clenched teeth.

Say it. Unless you want to stay in the machine forever.

Jimmy grimaced under the weight. He couldn’t take much more.

You want this to end? Then stop holding out, Kaczmarek chuckled.

Fine! Magnum, Jimmy could barely get the words out … is cooler than Rockford.

    There, was that so hard?

Pete Kaczmarek pushed a couple of buttons on the power press, and the resistance melted away. Jimmy gingerly pushed himself up with his aching arms and straddled the machine’s bench. Pete tossed him a towel, which he wasn’t quick enough to catch before it landed in his lap.

But Spade is still the best, Jimmy said.

You want to start again? Pete asked.

I think you have more in common with Max than I realized, Jimmy said as he wiped the sweat from his face.

Pete’s cousin Max was still doing time in the state pen, having been sent there a couple of times by Jimmy, the last time for three murders. Max had managed to have Jimmy drugged and framed, and would have killed him, too if Jimmy’s former police partner hadn’t arrived on the scene.

That’s not fair, Jimmy – you asked me to coach you. I just want to help you be the best you can be, Pete handed Jimmy a fortified water. Drink.

Jimmy took a swig of water. I could use a beer right now.

No – you need to stay hydrated, Pete said. "And you’ll lose some of
