About this ebook
Jimmy’s relationship with Diana has never been better, but then she gets control of the Southside Endowment. Jimmy starts to feel like just another possession, until a seeming ghost from the past gives him something to investigate. Possession may be nine-tenths of the law, but exactly what kind of possession are we talking about here?
“Possession" is a soft-boiled detective novella with some sci-fi and fantasy elements, sort of a The Rockford Files meets The Avengers (the old BBC series, not the superheroes.) It’s eighth in the Detective Jimmy Delaney series.
Offered now at a special preorder price.

Possession
Jimmy’s Cuda muscled its way across town, through the wonderland of the first light flurries of November. He had the windows closed, but he still had to crank the radio up to hear the strains of James Brown’s I Feel Good! over the rumble of the Cuda’s hemi. He sang along with abandon, confident that no one could hear him.
He had multiple reasons to echo the Godfather of Soul’s words. Things were starting to look up for his fledgling Delaney Investigation Company. His bounty for uncovering the apparel counterfeiting ring had finally come through from the Barnstow P.D., and that had also forced the Barnstow Bulls to pay him the fee they had promised for stopping the fraudulent use of the team’s logo.
After the disastrous discovery of just how susceptible the AugMonitors were to hacking, the department’s policy of mandatory implants had been revoked. It had taken a couple of weeks to complete the surgical schedule, but now there wasn’t a single AugMonitor remaining among Barnstow’s Finest. And the resentment his former coworkers had held toward him for being forced to have the implants in the first place was now replaced with a grudging respect for his part in uncovering Dr. Yon’s hacking.
Well, maybe not totally replaced, but it was getting there. They might even like him again. Someday.
Even that might be asking too much. But then, he had thought it would too much to ask for his old partner to be his friend once more, yet Al seemed to have finally gotten past whatever had been driving her personal resentment of Jimmy. It could have just been his leaving their partnership on the force, or typical cop vs. private-eye rivalry, or the misunderstanding about that blue pill and his intentions on their one date. He was pretty sure it was deeper than that, though. She had feelings for him, and her green-eyed jealousy had latched onto his relationship with Diana and was a constant cause of friction between them. But she had accepted how things were, and she and Jimmy were once again on friendly terms.
But above all, there was Diana.
Despite the rocky start they’d gotten off to - what with Diana and Dr. Yon controlling Jimmy with that implant and almost killing him, and then her manipulations surrounding a couple of major crimes - he and Diana were a couple. He had been suspicious of her intentions for years, even when she went through her very public reformation while working for Raymond Lewis. The late mogul had pursued his own reformation with a vengeance, and Diana had followed his lead after his murder, trying to lead women from Barnstow’s legal prostitution industry that Raymond Lewis had made some of his money in, and into the Working Sisters Foundation and their own reformed lives.
It had taken quite some time, but Jimmy had finally been able to accept without reservation that Diana had indeed reformed, and she had also proven to him that her interest in him was not opportunistic, but deep and true.
So now they were a couple, and he was on his way from his office upstairs in Pete Kaczmarek’s bar to the old Raymond Lewis estate, where Diana lived with the current girls of the Working Sisters Foundation.
His cell phone rang; it was Diana.
Jimmy, something has come up. I’m having Darcy drop me at The Prestige before she heads home from Gialani’s. Could you meet me there?
Sure thing, Babe. I’m in front of the estate, so it will be a half hour.
I’m sorry Jimmy.
Not a problem. Maybe we can do something in town. See you in a bit.
Jimmy made a u-turn in front of the gate and headed back the way he’d come.
The Prestige was part of the restoration that was supposed to be happening to Barnstow’s Southside, a restoration that Raymond Lewis had started before he was murdered in that very building. Jimmy had hoped to office there, but Sharon Lewis’ attempt to burn the building down – with Jimmy in it – and a nagging series of delays had put the kibosh on that prospect. The building’s restoration seemed to be on perpetual hold, as was the rest of the Southside project.
He pulled up to The Prestige, a large brownstone edifice that held the corner of South Main and 8th Avenue. Back in the 1920’s The Prestige had been where everything happened, but in more recent years it had fallen into disrepair and disuse. Raymond Lewis’ project had begun the restoration, but had not moved forward much since his death.
Jimmy entered the lobby. There were gaps here and there along the two story ceiling, where tin panels still needed replacement. Scaffolds stood about the space, and drop cloths to protect the white marble floors and polished wood accessories, but the dust layered on everything looked too long settled, and gave the lie to any notion that work was in progress. He heard voices from the ballroom, so went through the doors to meet Diana.
She was sitting at a long table in the midst of more drop cloths and scaffolding. Her long blond hair flowed onto the shoulders of the conservative blue business suit that was her usual uniform since she took on the persona of Misty Devereaux. The skirt was modest, but still did nothing to conceal her killer legs.
Diana glanced his way as he entered, and the smile that played across her bright blue eyes and full red lips froze him like a deer in the headlights. He would have said something about how hot she looked, but she wasn’t alone. Seated
