    Chapter One

It was way too damn cold. Who the hell gets married in February? Kevin muttered, his breath forming steam in the icy air as he hugged his arms tighter to his chest. Paige's text had said she was close, but he had assumed she was a lot closer to the airport before he had stepped outside. And, considering that he had flown in from California, he didn't have a proper jacket to insulate him from the frosty New England winter. He pulled his chin down into the collar of his beat up leather jacket and sighed. He wouldn't endure this kind of torture for anyone else, that was for damned sure.

Just when Kevin couldn't stop imagining his nose had fallen off because he couldn't feel it anymore, a green Subaru Forester flew up the way and stopped in front of him, crunching the icy snow below its tires. With a steamy exhalation of relief, he opened the back door and threw his suitcase and duffel bag into the warm interior. Then he climbed into the front, happy to feel hot air blasting on his ravaged face.

You know, you really shouldn't be standing out in the cold, Paige said with a shit-eating grin, and her dark brown eyes glinted with wicked mirth.

Kevin glared at his childhood friend and then smiled despite himself. If you were a guy, I'd hit you.

That never stopped you when we were little.

Yeah, but you learned to hit back. He leaned over and gave her a hug. It's good to see you.

She pecked him on the cheek. You too. She pulled away and raced through the snowy airport roadways at a nerve-wracking speed. "I am sorry about the delay. I texted you at a red light right outside the airport, then got stuck behind an old guy doing twenty under the speed limit."

That's okay, I'll get over the frostbite eventually.

    You poor baby.

Thanks for the sympathy. You think someone has a coat I could borrow while I'm in town?

I think Brent can probably swing that for you. She glanced over at him and her eyes dived downwards for a moment. So, are your legs cold, or are you…?

You know me too well, Kevin responded with a sheepish grin. Yes, I'm wearing.

    What color?

Suntan. Just a cheap pair of Leggs.

    Aw, nothing fancy?

I was saving the fancy ones for the wedding. Why, were you planning on peeking? How would your husband-to-be feel about that?

Let's not bother finding out. He's already jealous enough that I forced him to make you a groomsman.

Kevin shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Is… that's not going to be a problem, is it?

"Not if he knows what's good for him. And what's good for him is what I tell him is good for him. And I say you're a groomsman."

His friend's words did little to relieve him. He had been nervous about the whole ordeal the moment she had told him that she wanted him in the wedding party. Of course, it would have been the end of the world had he said no. The two of them had been friends for as long as he could remember, so he was more or less obligated to be an important part of one of the biggest days of her life. But he was worried about meeting her soon-to-be husband.

Are you sure you don't want me to stay at a hotel instead? he asked, breaking the brief silence. It's not like I can't afford it, and-

Jesus, are you that scared to meet Brent?

    No, I just… yes, I'm fucking terrified.

Paige laughed. He's a big puppy dog, Kevin. Do you really think I'd marry an overly jealous douchebag?

    "Hey,
