The darkness almost seemed like a living thing, ready to swallow Brad. The moon was obscured by October cloud cover, there were no streetlights because they were way out on the edge of town, and the house in question had no lights to speak of. The only illumination came from his cheap Dollar Store flashlight and the ones that each of his friends carried.

Well, friends wasn't quite the word for them. Tim and Lucas were his track teammates, and since Brad had just transferred and was new to the team, they had taken it upon themselves to initiate him. He took in what he could of the house in the darkness and whispered, Do I have to do this?

"You don't have to, Lucas said with a grin, holding the flashlight under his chin. You could always just come back with us to the Halloween party and get shitfaced. But then who knows what the next idea for an initiation is going to be."

One night in there, Tim added with an equally annoying grin. One night in the infamous Hawkins House. Take some video on your phone for proof, and you're in the clear.

And what's so special about this house? Brad asked. Why is it 'infamous'?

The grins left the faces of the other two young men and they looked at each other. There are a couple of local legends, Lucas said in a quieter voice. One is that a woman murdered her cheating husband in there, and her ghost haunts the house.

Another says a witch lives in there, but never reveals herself to outsiders, Tim said. They say if she catches you on her property, she'll curse you. Or worse.

Brad wanted to believe they were making the stories up just to scare him, but as he looked from face to face he realized that both of them seemed nervous just bringing up the legends. With a great swallow, he turned back to the house and said, If there's an emergency and I call you guys, you'll come get me, right?
