The first semester of college had been such a wonderful change from the nightmare of high school. It had been the fresh start that Stuart had needed – new people, new surroundings, and a new identity away from people who had known him. Sure, he was still working on the whole making friends thing, but being socially awkward was a hurdle that was going to take some time and effort to overcome. In general, though, things had been looking up.

Then, at the start of the second semester, she walked into his Literature 101 classroom. He hadn't even known they were going to the same college. What were the odds? He had moved several states over just to put distance between him and everything that he had put up with in high school. Including her.

She didn't notice him right away, but there was no way to hide. It wasn't a large classroom, and hiding behind a book would have drawn more attention than staving it off. He gave a silent resigned sigh and waited for her to catch sight of him. And when she did, there was a moment of wide-eyed surprise, followed by a frown that clearly said what he was thinking: What the fuck?! He returned it with a steady silent glare. She just shook her head and grabbed a seat on the opposite side of the room from him.

That first class was a bit of a blur.
