    Chapter One: About the Author

Bram Stoker is generally known for his masterpiece Gothic horror novel Dracula, however, his other novels and stories are equally admirable. This great writer was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 8th of November, 1847.

His parents were middle-class Protestants. Stoker was a sickly child during his early years, but he began to recover with the passage of time and eventually went on to attend Trinity College.

He studied science and mathematics at Trinity College. Having completed his education, he worked as a civil service clerk in Dublin for a brief period of time.

Although he was working as a clerk, he was always very much interested in literature.

Stoker began to write short fiction and even edited an Irish newspaper. He published his first story, The Crystal Cup, in 1872. That story was also sent to a magazine called The Shamrock in Dublin.

He became a volunteer drama critic in 1876 for the Dublin Evening Mail. During that period, he came across actor Henry Irving. In the year 1878, Bram Stoker moved to London, England. He became the manager for Henry Irving’s Lyceum Theatre.

Since he was highly innovative and experienced, he introduced several new practices into the theatre. He was the first person who introduced the idea of selling tickets for shows in advance and numbering the seats in the theatre.

While working for Irving, he remained quite busy. He used to do most of his writing on holidays and in his free time. His work at the theatre really helped him with his writing. Since he was the manager of the Lyceum Theatre, his novels were highly influenced by his position.

He got enough chances to travel to different parts of the country and abroad. Between 1883 and 1904, he visited America regularly with the tours of his company.

The main female character in the book The Mystery of the Sea is an American woman, although the major part of the story takes place in Scotland.

It is generally argued that Archibald Hunter, the protagonist of the novel, is an autobiographical character because he frequently visits Cruden. Stoker used to visit Cruden on regular basis.

Like Stoker, Archibald also says that he has studied law. Stoker never practised law. The character of Gormala is also inspired by a real life person. It is said that during 1901, once, Stoker was at the seaside.

He met a strange old woman there. The people in that area
