You should let me go with you.
Gwen said on the other end of the phone.
No, I have to do this alone,
Mia replied, But thank you for offering.
No problem. Listen, if she is there, just ignore her. Like she is beneath you.
I’ll try.
Mia replied and then they said good-bye and hung up.
Mia looked out the front window of her car. She couldn’t help but be nervous. Jacob was having an awards ceremony at school today celebrating good grades and other achievements. Mia knew Alex would be there which made her nervous to begin with. But she wouldn’t have put it past him to bring Michelle.
The thought of walking in there and seeing Michelle in front of all the other parents was enough to send Mia into the largest panic attack of her life. But not showing up wasn’t an option. Jacob deserved to have the support of both of his parents and Mia would be damned to not go to her child’s award ceremony because of Michelle.
Her palms were itchy. She rubbed them against her skirt and tried to focus on her breathing. Everything had gotten even messier the couple of days, as if that was even possible.

Did you go through my things?
Mia had retorted, furious that Charlie had gone through her things and embarrassed that he knew her secret.
Yes,
He said bluntly, I was waiting for you to get back and Darlene had unlocked the office for me. So I was waiting here for you and saw this in the bin and I yanked it out. Why didn’t you tell me about this?
He waved his hands around.
I didn’t realize you were my father,
She snapped at him, Why do you even care?
Because here I am, trying to help this business out and trying to believe you and then I find out this shit. The business is failing because of you.
"No, it isn’t just me. No one is shopping here. Yes, the debt is a big part of it. But the business was hit by the divorce. No one wanted to be seen here. This town
