Max woofed to get her attention. ‘I know, it’s dinner time.’

Sally was about to put his food down when the phone rang. It was Alison, needing an answer.

‘Have you decided yet? Are you coming to my hens’ do?’

‘Sorry. I can’t make up my mind,’ admitted Sally.

Alison sighed: ‘I can’t wait much longer. The hotel needs numbers today.’

Sally glanced at Max, who was nudging her ankles, anxious to be fed. What if she let him decide for her? She could put down two bowls. If Max chose the left one, she’d say yes. If he picked the right, it was no.
