One day during the final month of culinary school our instructor, Mrs. Wilson, walked into the room to address us with an uncharacteristically wide smile on her face. She told us that the following day we would be getting a visit from legendary chef Malcolm Tanner. An audible gasp passed through the room, everyone instantly overcome with some combination of excitement and nervousness. Although none of us needed to be made aware of Chef Tanner’s reputation, Mrs. Wilson reminded us anyway. His requirement for excellence in his dishes was matched only by the same requirement for those around him. That night I came home and told my husband Todd about the news. Todd worked as the manager of an upscale restaurant downtown and was well aware of Chef Tanner and his reputation. In our five years of marriage I could not remember Todd being so excited about any news I’d told him previously.
