Taming My Best Friend’s Daughter: He Might Be Watching (A Taboo Tale of Forbidden Lust)

Jim couldn’t get enough of the action. We’d been watching sporting events together since high school, but sometime during college he started placing increasingly large bets on them, almost ruining his life in the process. He’d pissed away enough mortgage payments that the bank foreclosed on him almost two years ago. For some reason his wife stayed with him up until about six months ago, when she found out that he’d also been missing rent payments every few months on the apartment they’d been forced to move into. In a way I felt bad for him, as we’d been close for so long now, and I knew he was a kind person inside. But gambling had taken a toll on him to the point where the only thing of any real value that he had left in his life was his daughter Jessie. She lived in the dorms at a local state college whose tuition must have been paid by her mother, and perhaps being out of the house shielded her in many ways from her father’s gambling problems.

Jim came over every weekend to watch sports with me, still. He was a grown man and even if I refused to watch with him he’d just be doing it anyway, either on his own or at the local bar. Every now and then he’d tell me he’d stopped gambling and was just watching for fun, but I could easily tell when he was lying by the way he’d overreact to every play, no matter the sport or teams involved. I’d tried to help him in the past, but I’d realized long ago that he was spiraling out of control and that hitting rock bottom would be the only thing that would shake him enough to seriously consider changing.

We were watching a college basketball game that Jim was overly interested in when his cell rang. I was surprised when he took the call and even got up from his chair to walk around while talking. From the smile on his face I figured he must have been winning lately and his bookie was calling to entice him to let the winnings ride. However, when he hung up and said that Jessie says hi a smile came across my face as well. I’d been with him enough times when he ignored calls from his ex-wife because she was interrupting the game that it made me proud that even though he hadn’t stopped betting he was still prioritizing his daughter. I’d known Jessie since she was born; calling me Uncle Kenny throughout her childhood even though I wasn’t related to her dad. Jim explained to me that he’d been working overtime at the factory to get enough money so Jessie could join some of her girlfriends on
