    Chapter 1

    Beth

I froze at the faint crackling sound behind me.

I’d taken the job in the little town because of the vast amounts of forested land that surrounded it. Plenty of safe places to run to my heart’s content.

The night was so nice, I hadn’t been able to resist changing and going exploring in the dense trees. The tension had fallen away as I took in the scents and sounds that surrounded me.

    Then I heard it.

At first, I’d thought it was just the brisk breeze, or maybe one of the tiny creatures that lived in the woods scurrying away.

But I could feel my fur prickling as something watched me.

Whatever it was, it had been careful to stay downwind.

I forced myself to start moving, to act as if I hadn’t heard anything. I meandered in a semicircle, nonchalantly stopping to smell something interesting here and there.

When I was facing the direction I’d come from and was fairly certain the something was behind me, I booked it.

My heart pounded as I darted under a log and dodged around trees, hoping it had all been in my head.

I didn’t hear anything following me, so I risked a glance back.

And saw a huge, dark shadow trailing me.

My heart sped up impossibly faster.

I deliberately veered toward small openings- through a bush here, a narrow opening there- hoping they would slow down my much larger pursuer.

Foxes were nothing if not quick. I held onto that thought as I scrambled for purchase climbing a steep hill.

Just a little farther. My car was parked not that far from here. Of course, I would have to change and grab the keys before I could dive into its safety, but one step at a time, right?

My heart stopped as I felt hot breath on my tail.

And then I was skidding on the ground as a heavy weight crashed down on top of me.

I tried to wiggle out from under it, but the weight just shifted and held me down even harder, jaws clamping down on the back of my neck.

Oh God, this was it. This was how I was going to die.

I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for those sharp teeth to tear into me.

    And waited.

    And waited a bit longer.

    Cautiously, I opened my eyes.

After a moment, the jaws opened slowly.

    Gabe

I let go slowly, making sure to keep my weight on her so she wouldn’t bolt.

And it was definitely a she.

I’d been out for a run when I smelled her.

She smelled different. Different and…almost sweet.

Curious, I’d followed my nose. The scent of human clung to her little form, so I knew she must be a shifter. But the only ones I’d ever encountered had been wolves like me.

I hadn’t meant to scare her, but I obviously hadn’t been as stealthy as I thought. But in my defense, I’d just wanted to get a little closer so I could get a good whiff of her.

When she’d bolted, all of my hunter instincts had risen to the forefront and I’d just had to give chase, following that adorably fluffy tail as she squirmed through the smallest openings. She might have lost me had it not been for the loose earth that had made her fumble for the second it took me to reach her.

Now I had her. And had absolutely no idea what to do next.

If I lifted my weight off her, I was pretty sure she would be off like a rocket and I didn’t know if I would catch her in time again.

And if some other wolves from my pack found her…
