Raine. Pick up, damn it.

Opening a bleary eye at the impatient voice, Raine Tearny debated rolling over and going back to sleep. But the rising panic in Thomas’s voice prodded her into getting up.

Reaching for the radio, she depressed the button, holding back a yawn. She’d spent the entire day making sure the animals were fine and that their shelters were tight against the impending sand storm that would soon be descending on this remote outpost of the Kingdom of Keery.

Thank God. Raine, we’re going to have to call you back to active duty. There’s an emergency.

A surge of adrenaline had her straightening up in the rumpled sheets, her eyes clearing.

What type of emergency? she asked briskly, throwing the covers back.

The incubi delegation had to stop and make an encampment due to illness. The women assigned to them had to be sent home, so they were waiting for replacements to arrive before continuing on to the capital for negotiations.

But the sandstorm is going to hit, she interjected.

Exactly. The storm is projected to last up to a week. The replacements had to turn back, otherwise they risked being caught outside without proper equipment. And the incubi have already not fed for going on five days.
