They just got back from the front, Elena, from an area the Priestesses couldn't go. I wouldn't ask you for this, but all the Priestesses are away at the Retreat to ready themselves for the New Cycle.

It wasn’t that I didn’t understand Roman's dilemma. Two Warriors coming back from the front lines after this much time without release...

But I wasn't trained to calm and soothe with pleasure like the Priestesses were. Training which was both mental and physical, so they could withstand the demands that would be made on them.

In comparison, I was just too...soft.

A wave of heat went through my body, followed by a chill. The Steel Warden Clan was known for taking in only the most deadly of Warriors. Warriors were already among the elite, but the Wardens were the pinnacle.

But that wasn't what had hit me so hard. At least, it wasn't all of it. Roman couldn't know, but I knew who Maxim and Neil were. Although they probably didn't remember me.

About a year ago, they had been among the battalion that had come back to their base fort, here in Malaya. As the appointed Royal Funds Manager in this area of the King's southeastern territories, I didn't have much contact with the fighting forces. I spent most of my time in a tower room by myself, going over various receipts and ledgers.

However, Marco, one of the many blacksmiths in the area, had repaired a Warrior's dagger that needed to be returned as soon as possible. His normal delivery boy had a broken leg and Marco himself couldn't leave the forge untended when he had so much more work that needed to be done. It would be a great boon for his prestigious client to say good things about his establishment- but a bad word could ruin his reputation and deal a fatal blow to his business.

Even then, I might have said no. I'd heard the same stories everyone else had. But Marco was a dear friend and I knew he must have been at the end of his rope to ask me.
