What A Bear Wants - Emma Alisyn
Chapter 1
T amsin, your mother wants the potato salad,
Branson said, hovering in the kitchen doorway.
Tamsin glanced at her fiancé, putting down her knife to get the bowl out of the fridge. She knew Branson wouldn't step a single toe inside the kitchen, even to get a dish. He considered it a female's domain and inviolate.
He glanced down as she handed it to him, scrutinizing the creamy salad. Did you put enough bacon in it? No one out there is a vegetarian, Tamsin.
There's enough bacon,
she replied, turning to the second salad she was preparing, various chopped fruits with sprigs of mint and a drizzle of honey. Did you need something else?
His mouth thinned. Branson Bartholomew Harrison enjoyed what he believed to be the enviable position of being the only son of a wealthy, pure blooded shifter family in the Clan. He'd been raised to expect deference from those around him- and pitched very civilized fits whenever he thought she was dismissing him.
When we're married, you'll have to learn to... upgrade... these family gatherings. They just won't do for what my social circle is accustomed to.
For the dozenth time Tamsin wondered what the male wanted to marry her for if he found her family so plebian. What he didn’t realize, because he was taught to focus on appearances, was that her family finances rivaled his own- maybe topped. Her stepfather’s landscaping and home remodeling businesses prospered, the profits cannily invested. But because he worked with his hands and his sons in the open air, he was still considered working class. Tamsin suppressed a snort. She wondered what her future husband would say when he found out her trust fund trumped his.
But she nodded, choosing to ignore his criticism rather than defend. After all, he was doing her a favor. Once they were married, she would never think about... him... again. If she were a wife and mother, naturally the unrequited desire she harbored for a forbidden male would disappear. Leave her in peace. Her husband’s cock could massage the ache between her thighs- or put it out, more like.
He left finally, and Tamsin paused to lean against the counter, staring out of the window, a smile curving her lips as she watched the people she loved eat her food, laugh and enjoy each other. Her family. Nothing else was more important.
When’s it time for cake?
Natalie asked, waddling into the kitchen, a huge smile on her face. Tamsin’s twin sister, Terah, came in on her heels. I've saved enough room.
Tamsin patted her stepsister’s stomach. We haven't even started on the steaks yet.
Natalie lowered herself into a chair. It’s never too early for cake. Come on, let me have a peek. Your decorations are always flawless.
No, and if you try to sneak I'll make sure you have a guard on you. It's a surprise.
Natalie sighed, grimacing. Fine, torture a poor pregnant woman. Hey, that fiancé of yours- he's kinda cute. Shy, though. What’s up with that?
Tamsin snorted. He’s not shy; he's just an only cub. Used to... quieter affairs.
He’s an ass,
Terah said, rifling through the fridge. After a moment she shut it, a disgusted look on her face. "There’s nothing but juice in here."
Tamsin eyed her. The males have all the beer.
Terah scowled. I know. Walker-
Walker what?
Never mind.
Natalie’s head cocked to the side as she studied Tamsin. I've known you for two years,
she said slowly. And I’ve learned to tell when you don’t really like someone. Which is damned hard, as nice as you are to everybody. Why are you marrying this guy?
Terah snorted, slumping into a chair. She folded her arms, staring out the window moodily.
Tamsin picked up her knife and started slicing tops off strawberries. He's from a good, stable family. He’ll provide-
"Oh my God," Terah said.
"That’s bullshit.
