The scent of fresh cinnamon buns had drawn Stuart into the new bakery but by the time he reached the front of the line they were all sold out.

Maybe try the cinnamon raisin bread instead? the teenaged girl behind the counter suggested with an nervous laugh.

Sure. Stuart gave her his hundred watt smile and edged carefully back through the Saturday morning crowds towards the bread racks.

At six foot three and two hundred pounds of solid muscle, Stuart knew he intimidated most people. The full black beard didn't help. Neither did the leather jacket but it was tough finding clothes he liked. The navy blue cashmere coat his sister Caitlyn had bought him two Christmases ago still hung in his closet unworn. Maybe a big Russian or Italian guy could pull off that look. They had the right wardrobe, the right shoes. And they didn't wander around in the rain or dribble coffee down their front like he did.

The bakery sold an impressive array of bread, some golden brown, others dusted with flour, oats or seeds. Round, oval, oblong, braided. Plain and flavoured. What the racks didn't have were labels. Stuart tried to make himself smaller as people darted around him, grabbing loaves from the shelves. It made him anxious, like he'd miss out on the raisin bread, too, so he used a plastic bag to nab an oblong loaf.
