About this ebook

I was on Baffin Island, finally using my botany degree, when my husband Greg emailed me this rant about having his babies. He never mentioned kids before. I felt so betrayed. Jumping aboard this Danish cruise ship was the perfect vanishing act. I decided to have seven affairs, one for every year I'd wasted with Greg. But if the hunky Captain Clemens didn't mind his manners, he wasn't making the list.

    One: The Letter

I should have never checked my email.

I was way up north on Baffin Island in Nunavut, the territory above Hudson Bay, working in an idyllic little camp on the edge of the Arctic Ocean as part of a joint Canadian-Norwegian study on the medicinal properties of Arctic mosses. Hadn't been in touch with my husband Greg back in Vancouver for a couple of months so I harangued Erik, the captain of the Norwegian science vessel, into letting me use his satellite internet connection. Big mistake. Greg had been listening to his parents too long and wanted me to come back home and become his baby factory. He didn't put it like that, of course. There was a lot of the affectionate stuff that made living in such a remote area possible for me—I love you so much, I think about you every day, I can't live without you—before the message devolved into a long rant about how it was time to settle down and stop being so selfish.

Selfish? I was thirty-one and had finally gotten the funding to do the research I'd gone to university for instead of serving time in the restaurant industry to send his sorry ass through medical school. He'd agreed to what I was doing out here. This was our plan from the beginning. I scrolled through the rest of the email, numbly noting that he no longer wanted to move to Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital, to practice medicine so we could spend the winters together. It would deprive his parents of their grandchildren, he said. Had to love the plural on that given Greg was an only child.

Erik poked his shaggy head into the control room. The man was so huge that he'd take up half the floor space if he came in and his crew weren't any smaller. They were completely out of scale with their flat, treeless surroundings and roamed the camp with their shoulders hunched up, trying to make themselves look smaller. I'd actually used one of them as a waymarker when I'd gotten turned around on a hike across the tundra.

    You done yet, Regina?

Very done. I logged out and spun the stool around to face him. Greg wants to start a family.

The big grin that split his beard in two was not the response I was hoping for. Congratulations, Regina! I'm so happy for you both. You will make a very good mother.

I narrowed my eyes. And what makes you say that, Erik?

You are, you know . . . He mimed an hourglass shape. Very matronly, ya?

    "So I
