About this ebook

Sadie: Getting lost on a Swedish military air base during training exercises was one of a long list of risky things I'd done since my husband Chester cheated on me. At first I think the young scarred thug who helps me get back to town is kind of sweet. Then I find out he's dropped me in a pile of trouble. I'll get him back—right after I get him into bed. Erik: She claimed to be a Texas bounty hunter so I figured I'd teach her a lesson. Should have checked her story first. The boss says I have to love a lady who can outfox me. Sure, I want her. But love? That's for suckers.

There was a rip in the chainlink fence almost as big as the hole in my heart.

I rolled to a stop and got off my rented bicycle. A fine June evening in northern Sweden. The sun was high in the sky. All I could hear was bird song and the wind in the trees but I couldn't help looking up and down the deserted country road and peering into the dark forest on either side, half expecting to find someone watching me. I wasn't usually so paranoid but the tall fence running along the right side of the road belonged to a military airbase. Not something I'd expected to find on a random bike ride. The sign at the front gate a few klicks back had been pretty clear that the land inside the fence was private property and excluded from the Swedish right to public access laws. Public access meant you could go all over the countryside, even eat the berries and fruit as long as you didn't damage anything. It was such a relief from Texas where you could get shot for simply looking at someone's property too hard. After blithely traipsing through farmers' fields and idyllic woodlands for the past two months, I found the barrier personally offensive.

I walked my bike into the forest on the left side of the road and lay it down under a cluster of white birch then covered it with leaves. Couldn't see it from the road. I looked around again then went over to the fence. The chainlink was torn and rusted rather than cut and there were hanks of beige fur on some of the wires. Looked like elk or what the Swedes insisted on calling moose. If the animals made a habit of using this as a doorway, it was futile to repair it since they'd rip another hole in the fence somewhere else. Knowing it had been there a long time made me feel better about trespassing but I still got an excited tumble in my stomach when I ducked through.

I'd been following the rules too damn long.

Nine p.m. I was standing in a small clearing, munching an apple and cursing myself. Sure, I had a compass but I'd forgotten to take my bearings before going in. That's what I got for relaxing on vacation. The road did not, as I'd assumed, run straight north-south because I'd been walking steadily back west for twenty minutes and found nothing but denser forest. No sign of the fence. I flipped a coin then started walking north-west.

A little after eleven, I found a collection of rundown concrete buildings and a huge rusting airplane hangar along one side of a cracked runway. A gravel road headed inexplicably east into the forest—my best bet for getting out of this place. My rental bike was a loss. So was the hefty deposit I'd forked over. Might as well throw away my compass, too, for all the good it had done me. But the weather was beautiful, I had energy bars, fruit and water and someone was bound to give me a lift into Boden once I got back to the main road. Watching the sun kiss the treetops, the closest it got to setting this time of year, I could almost convince myself this was an adventure rather than a dangerous miscalculation.

    Then I heard the trucks.

    Erik

I was so intent on staying hidden myself that I almost missed her crouched behind the tree. She was facing the road so all I could see was the long blonde braid down her back and her round ass balanced on the thick heels of her hiking boots. Casual khaki jacket
