About this ebook

Sadie: I can't abandon my husband Chester after Lucy hurt him but Erik is so wild in bed. I can't stay away from him. Then Chet shows me a seductive side I never imagined he had. New love or old? I can't decide. And I still don't know why Lucy's out to ruin my life.
Eric: Should I get as much out of Sadie as I can before she runs back to Texas with her old man? Or have I finally found someone I can trust who will stay with me? I'm getting so obsessed with this lady that I'm fighting with the boss—and considering how me and him met that's never a good sign.

My husband Chester was finally asleep after crying in my arms for the past several hours. His heavy grey head rested on my left breast so he could hear my heartbeat. His old man's body pinned me to the small bed. His old man's smell filled the expensive hotel room, obliterating the fragrant scents of the room service breakfast we'd eaten. The food Erik had brought me yesterday afternoon sat untouched in the pretty pink and white bag on the dresser. I had to do something about that and figure out the hotel bill with Heidi but for now I stared up at the sunlight playing over the ornate plaster ceiling and struggled to breathe.

We'd tried having sex but it hadn't worked. I had no desire for Chet and he was horrified by Lucy's cruel revelation yesterday. But that can't be a crime, he kept saying. If I got it up I must have wanted to have sex with her. Then he'd apologize and say he loved me and Lucy meant nothing. I'd spent weeks in anguish, believing Chet had used that bottle blonde to wreck our twenty year marriage and now I wished it was true. Anything other than finding out what Lucy had done to us both.

I didn't want to say the word but if it applied to a woman who got slipped a mickey and taken advantage of then it applied to Chet, too. But Lucy had destroyed the evidence so it would be her word against Chet's and what man would stand up in a Texas court room and make such a claim? It would never happen.

Lucy was set on ruining my life for reasons I could not fathom. It wasn't safe for Chester to stay around me and returning to Texas would simply mean I was on her home turf. But staying in Sweden meant I was near Erik and I couldn't put my thoughts in order about him. It didn't help that the room's decor, all gold and brown and green, was like Erik's beautiful hazel eyes. That I could still feel his young hard body making love to me while I lay pinned under Chester.

I found a trendy cafe a few blocks away from the boutique hotel and sat in front of the laptop I'd borrowed from the concierge while I sipped my coffee. At ten in the morning, the place was filled with business travellers and university students, most of them talking on their phones or skyping. The music was turned up and the espresso machine ground and hissed. The noise was soothing. Normal.

What I was about to do was not normal.

I checked no one could see my screen then searched for the name Lucy had called Erik. Punching Bag. Didn't have to refine the search at all. And the photo that came up beside the first link on the list took my breath away.

A young Erik stared out at me, vulnerable and sweet. Clean shaven, brown shadow on his shaved scalp, skin pale against the gloom of the gym. His face was so beautiful and delicate it was hard to believe he was a Marine. When I'd first seen his broken boxer's face I thought he'd been ugly before he'd gotten beaten up, that it hadn't made much of a difference to him. But now I could see it had changed everything.

The link took me to a website where I could buy single images or the whole series. I tried not to look too hard at the blurb about the photos but certain phrases caught my eye because they were so horrible. Pretty boy punching bag. Hardcore violence. Innocence taken. Savage beating. My heart raced and I regretted the coffee. Surely it was all staged like wrestling? Surely it wasn't real? I tried to look at the images first but it wouldn't let me. I glanced around again then typed in Erik's credit card number and downloaded the whole series to my USB key, hoping it wouldn't be too obvious to the hotel staff what I'd done. I wasn't sure why I used his card. Seeing the charge on his bill next month would hardly make him think kindly of me.

I opened the file. The first photo in the series was the same one I'd seen: the cover image. What would the next one be? How quickly would the violence escalate? I felt like I was sitting in front of a bomb and guessing at which wire to cut. I could understand why Erik couldn't bear to look so beautiful and feminine but why degrade himself like this? I swallowed bile and scrolled to the next image.

It almost broke my heart. Erik's eyes were wet
