    One: Sneaky Business

I stood in the bathroom, tears running down my cheeks as I used a hand mirror to study the mess of raw bloody welts on my back. Lauritz was wrong. They were going to scar. I'd been such an idiot to trust him. Anyone nice would have told me I didn't want to find out what being caned bloody felt like. They would have suggested something else or made it into a soft make-believe experience instead of taking advantage of my self-destructive curiosity.

Oh, yes. I'd agreed to this. I could blame Lauritz but in the end it was my own damn fault. And now that I'd taken the bandages off, I'd have to tell Hannah about it because I couldn't dress the wounds myself.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I put the mirror down and scrubbed at my eyes.

My hot sexy games had been fun and daring and risque until half an hour ago when I'd spotted my boyfriend Tobais on the street. Then it had all come crashing down around my ears. I'd lost more than my moral compass; I'd lost my common sense and my self-respect. I was playing stupid reckless games with dangerous violent men who didn't care for me at all.

Why had I ever imagined they did?

    I love you, Nicola.

I jumped and covered my breasts. No way to hide my back. Could only look at Tobais' shoes in the bathroom doorway not his face. They looked so out of place since Swedes always took their shoes off at home. He had to be upset. How did you get in, Tobais?

You gave me your key. He jangled his key ring. You're shivering. May I please help you?

The tears made a comeback. I bowed my head and turned away. I'm so stupid.

I don't think so. He moved behind me and opened the medicine cabinet over the sink. You certainly have enough bandages and ointments. Will Hannah mind if we use these?

    No.

Right. He set out what he needed in a methodical way, washed his hand then filled the basin with warm water.

This might sting, he warned as he lathered up a wash cloth.

I shook my head. I don't know why people say that when it's clear it already hurts.

A polite warning so you don't hit me? He was gentle and quick and had the bandages back on within five minutes.

I examined my green and orange striped sweater: no blood. I pulled it gingerly over my head. "It felt like everyone on the street could see what I'd done
