    CHAPTER 1

Zooming spaceships and thunderous explosions lit up the stage as the primly-dressed announcer spoke from the side podium. The huge array of screens behind him flickered, now showing gigantic digital landscapes choked over with battling warcraft and grim-faced soldiers. "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, dragons, gamers, and proud nerds! Welcome to Grand Galaxy Entertainment's unveiling of our amazing new MMORPG, Dimension Alliance Unlimited!"

Applause, cheers, and fangirl screams reverberated off the walls of the packed convention hall. Flashes lit up the stage from a phalanx of camera phones.

The announcer continued. Ninety-nine years in the future, a human space probe encounters the outer fringes of an oppressive alien empire called the Goroth Supremacy. The screens behind him showed an immense image of a small Voyager 2-like probe being blasted to bits by a huge menacing silhouette against the expanse of stars. Faced with annihilation and oppression, Earth's small alliance of interdimensionally-connected worlds must band together to fight for their very survival!

Wait a minute, Karun the dragoness said from behind the stage as she and the other girls made last-minute adjustments to their costumes. "How could they be facing annihilation and oppression? Doesn't one kind of cancel the other?"

Karun stood eight foot three inches tall, a blue humanoid saurian towering over most other occupants of the human-dominated dressing room. Like all her kind, she sported an angular reptilian head, a long sinuous tail, supple scaly skin, and large wings sprouting from her back. Otherwise, her form was very human-like, even sporting attractive curves any human woman would be proud of.

Aura, another dragoness but magenta in color, bent low, making sure Karun's skin-tight faux-spacesuit was sticking in all the right places. With the central zipper pulled down to well below Karun's navel, one spot of defective skin glue would allow all sorts of distracting body parts to flop out. While nudity laws were far more lax for dragons than for humans, Grand Galaxy wanted their models to be visual enhancements, not the show in and of themselves. Remember in the game, the Earth Alliance gets oppressed if they surrender, and threatened with annihilation if they don't, Aura said. Mr. Higgs just worded that poorly.

What I don't get, Surun said, playfully whooshing around a giant plastic blade nearly six feet long. The prop sword was embedded with arrays of colorful LEDs to make it glow softly. Is why my character has a magic sword. Isn't this supposed to be science fiction? And what good would a sword be against explode-y alien guns, anyway? Surun was the biggest of the three dragon models employed by Grand Galaxy, eight and a half feet tall with rusty orange scales.

"That's because Grand Galaxy wants to tie this in with its other big franchise, Aether Warp. The voice behind her belonged to a tall human woman called T'Keyah. T'Keyah was herself dressed in costume of futuristic battle-armor, but one that still luridly left her navel and cleavage showing. She quickly worked a needle and thread across the top of the tail hole in Surun's stylized bikini bottom, repairing a rip. Its supposed to be a new world Earth discovers through its interdimensional network, but one that uses magic instead of normal scientific laws."

    But how would magic...

T'Keyah finished up, laughing and slapping the gigantic dragon on her equally gigantic ass. "Because its a game, silly. Now, shh. Our cues are coming up."

Mr. Higgs' voice boomed throughout the hall. And no MMO is complete without amazing, highly customizable characters to play and interact with! The lights in the auditorium went low as a line of spotlights illuminated a path across the stage.

All the models, male and female, human and dragon, lined up and paraded up the steps and onto the stage in their colorful costumes, gleaming brightly in the spotlights. A triumphant instrumental rock anthem swelled from the speakers.

Karun tripped going up the steps, nearly toppling over. Thankfully Aura, just behind her dressed in the tight super-hero like uniform of an Enhanced Trooper, managed to catch her elbow to steady her. That got a few snickers from the nearby audience members.

This was the first time anyone had used dragon models at a scifi convention event in this part of the country. While many in the audience had seen dragons on TV and occasionally even walking around on the street, it was the first time most of them had seen a group of them live, especially dressed in provocative genre costumes. They were interspersed with twice as many humans, but their presence still produced an intrigued murmuring among many in the audience and a smattering of appreciative applause.

When each model hit their mark--one to each individual spotlight--they were to cycle through a number of poses while the announcer gave a spiel about each of the character archetypes they represented. Karun missed her mark and almost ran into the human model ahead of her before she caught herself and stepped back. She was also slow in striking her first pose.

After the description of the characters wrapped up, the models retreated to either side of the stage, lined up while the spotlights followed the game's lead designers for a speech and a question-and-answer session. The models were still required to pose, but could relax a bit as the focus of attention was off of them.

Are you all right? Aura asked Karun in a whisper.

    I'm fine! Karun hissed impatiently.

Are you kidding? I can feel your fever from here. Dragons were much more sensitive to heat than humans, and even separated by nearly a foot Aura could feel the subtle change in Karun's body temperature. If you need to sit down...

This isn't the time! Karun snapped, perhaps louder than she meant to. The announcer turned and rewarded her with a sour frown. She broke into a smile as he looked away, then frowned again, fidgeting with her hands.

Aura's eyes popped wide in realization. Oh my gosh! Are you going into...

Shhh! Please. The blue dragon was no longer angry, but pensive, sucking her lip with brows arched high in anxiety.

Aura opened her mouth, wanting to say much more. But she glanced at the huge audience watching them, and could only nod in understanding.
