    CHAPTER 1

The ghostly ring of asteroid debris circling this Earth was barely visible in the southern sky. It appeared as an ethereal arch of faded white across the cloud-dappled blue, canted at an angle to the horizon.

On my Earth in another reality, that asteroid had missed the planet completely when it zipped by some 12,000 years ago. But in this alternate reality, a tiny variable like a small outgassing event or a minor collision caused the big space rock to pass just close enough to be pulled into low orbit, where tidal forces ripped it apart. Many of the larger chunks bombarded Earth, while its smaller debris and dust formed the ring in the sky.

The various catastrophic impacts so close together, along with the additional shade of the new ring, had extended an already harsh ice age for twelve millennia and counting.

Teeth nipped my balls. Hey! Pay attention to me.

I whurfed at the momentary pain, turning away from the frosted window. I chuckled, running my hands over the blond-haired head nestled in my crotch. Sorry, Sophie. My mind wandered for a sec.

She gave my exposed hard shaft a long, lascivious lick, then stood and pressed her lithe body up to mine. Her flannel shirt and bra underneath were both opened, her big soft tits smooshing against me. I swear, Milo, you're such a nerd. You're the only guy I know who can get distracted in the middle of a blow job.

I smirked as I nibbled at her neck. Then why do you keep screwing me?

She murred, one hand dipping down as she stroked me. Better a nice nerd than the self-absorbed assholes on the rest of the crew. Besides, you're certainly not built like a typical nerd. She ran her hands appreciatively over my solid shoulders under my open coat, built up from many years of construction work.

Reynolds is supposed to be nice...

He only has eyes for Steve. The two of them are probably spending dinner break the same way we are.

My eyes rimmed wide. They're gay? Really?

She snorted. Its cute you didn't know. But even if Reynolds didn't prefer sausage, I'd still like snuggling you best. She patted my paunch affectionately. I've always had a thing for cuddle-bear mountain-man types.

I'd been working construction for nearly ten years now, at first mostly as a way to pay for college. I kept at it after the job market for my field of study dried up. I'd built up quite a few muscles almost incidentally, along with a beer belly to go with them. I'd been compared to Grizzly Adams a few times, as my build and short dark beard made me vaguely resemble the lead actor from that old TV series.

Sophie turned around and shimmied her unzipped jeans down her legs, revealing her big solid pale ass. Let's get to the main course, handsome. We barely got fifteen minutes left.

Our overcoats and gloves were in a heap on the broad bench beside us. We still had most of our other clothes on, just with our pants pulled down and our underlayers open. We had the small modular supply cabin to ourselves, but even within its insulated walls the temperature was no better than forty degrees Fahrenheit. That may seem cold to people back home, but it was downright balmy compared to the freezing temperatures outside.

Sophie angled herself down between my spread legs, her shaven pussy nudging against my throbbing cock tip. I leaned back against the wall, hands on her hips both to help guide her on and for the exquisite feel of her soft bare skin under my callused fingers.

My co-worker pushed down and I drove up inside her slippery velvet tunnel. We both moaned in rapture. Sophie pulled up until I was almost out, then slipped back down, making sure I surged into her tight pussy a few more inches. Another bounce and I was fully buried in her. She looked back at me with lidded eyes and a gigantic smile, then began grinding back and forth with my cock still fully nestled in her. My hands slipped up her body to squeeze at her pillowy boobs.

She bounced a little now and then, but concentrated mostly on stirring my magic wand round and round in her heated cauldron. One of her hands slipped down, momentarily caressing over my bloated balls, then churned over her small clitoris. Oh god, Milo! You have such a hot dirty cock. Fuck me!

I loved it when women talked like that. My hands settled back over her hips and I began delivering short, hard thrusts up into her cunt, timing them as best I could with her grinding. Her moaning whimpers waxed louder and louder.

As we had to make this quick, I couldn't hold back. Just a few minutes more was all it took. I cried out as I came, gushing my seed deep into her quivering folds.

Sophie continued to grind on me gently even after I was spent, her fingers vibrating like mad over her clit. She soon orgasmed as well, sucking in a deep trembling breath as her body went stock still.

As soon as she finished, she pulled off of me. We cleaned up as best we could with some napkins filched from the mess tent. We quickly got fully dressed again, pulling on heavy coats, gloves and more, and hurried outside to resume our work shift.

To the north was a sight as equally impressive as the debris ring to the south. A massive jagged wall of ice jutted into the sky almost a thousand feet high, spreading from horizon to horizon less than a mile away. That barrier in fact stretched across the breadth of the entire North American continent, even reaching leagues out into the ocean nearby. The megaglacier was currently in one of its decades-long expansion phases, racing toward us at some twenty-five feet a day. It would crush what remained of the alt-Boston base in a little over half a year. Even this far away, we could easily hear the occasional groaning and popping of the gigatons of slowly creeping ice.

My crew were here to do what humanity did best in the face of such an unrelenting force of nature: pack up and run the hell away.

    CHAPTER 2

In the late 1970s, the United States tested an esoteric theory about the creation of kugelblitzes. A kugelblitz is a black hole created solely by concentrating vast amounts of energy into a single tiny pinpoint. Using carefully customized and synched atomic weapons in a top-secret underground test, the scientists sought to create a short-lived black hole that would, in theory, evaporate away within a milliseconds.

Instead, in the crater of ground zero in the smoking aftermath, floated a strange mirrored globe ten feet wide.

It took the scientists many days of panic, tests, recriminations, scanning, cursing, and recalibrating sixty years’ worth of quantum theory to realize that they had accidentally created a stable wormhole. One, they soon learned, leading to a parallel Earth in another dimension.

Later that year the experiment was repeated, with similar results. Another wormhole, and another alternate world opened up to humanity. Then another and another, as the United States, and later its allies and its rivals, refined techniques for accessing these other realities.

The near-copies of modern day Earth as imagined in science fiction never materialized, however. These new worlds, while still recognizably Earth, had radically different histories from the one humanity experienced, some diverging thousands or even millions of years ago.

One boasted completely new orders of life such as shapeshifters and dragons. One never developed multicellular life at all and bore barren continents surrounded by thick, goopy oceans. Yet another was once home to an extinct civilization of advanced bio-engineers that had recreated dinosaurs over much of their world.

By the turn of the millennium, the existence of these parallel worlds was finally declassified to the public at large. The leading nations had
