PREFACE
Raising children is such an important responsibility for parents; and it ’ s a shame that we are not doing more as a society to help parents get it right.
We put a lot more effort into preparing people to drive cars, cook food, cut hair or plumb our kitchen sink—than we put into helping parents raise the next generation of leaders, ministers, politicians and law-makers. Both our education and health-care systems are guilty of this.
The result is that our society is at a crossroad and our children are leaving home without the tools they need to make it in a complicated and often confusing world.
Parents almost always want to leave a legacy for their children. Unfortunately, many parents think of legacy only in the form of tangible things like money, houses, education or possessions.
However, lasting legacy is much bigger than stuff. It is about integrity, humility, generosity, fairness, and faith—intangible virtues that make our children positive contributing members of society.
It is my goal in this concise book to parents, to contribute my thoughts to the ongoing debate, and to share some well-worn tools that parents of all ages have to deposited in their children before sending them out into this capricious world to fend for themselves.
INTRODUCTION
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6.)
Preparing children for an effective life in society is our responsibility as parents. But we can ’ t do our job well, if we don ’ t accept this responsibility joyfully and wholeheartedly; and face it confidently and seriously.
If as parents, we can ’ t see why our children ’ s developmental needs should supersede our social life or career progress, the chances that we would make wholesome decisions about how we raise them are likely to be very slim.
We may, for instance, think it ’ s okay to abandon little Johnny to numerous child-minders
