While it is common for all of us to feel ‘the blues’ sometimes, a prolonged feeling of sadness and low moods can be characteristic of depression. This occurs not just over a few days; it lasts much longer than that. A person is said to be suffering from depression when this feeling of despair lasts for weeks or sometimes even months.

These feelings often interfere with daily routines by having an adverse effect on one’s actions, thoughts, behaviours and feelings. Sometimes, it affects an individual’s physical health as well.

Depression is not something that disappears by itself. Therefore, we need to be well aware of the common signs and symptoms displayed by those suffering from it. These symptoms can be observed in the person’s everyday behaviour. Adequate knowledge about the condition will help us combat it more effectively.
