    Introduction

    What is detoxification and how does this type of diet help the body?

    Knowing what toxins are and how they affect the body is the first step to understanding how a detox diet is beneficial. Toxins can be peptides, proteins or molecules that may cause illness or disease when absorbed by the tissues of the body. They range from mild toxins to deadly ones. They can also be the cause of weight gain and general bad health.

    Some toxins are man-made. This includes insecticides used on crops to kill pests and herbicides used for ridding crops of weeds. Other common ones are part of found in products that are used daily. They are called teratogenic agents. For example, aspirin, coffee, alcohol are teratogenic agents. They are also agents such drugs, viruses and infections and x-rays.

    Ridding the body of toxins that adversely affect health is the number one way to a good health. There are natural processes for cleansing the body of toxins. Typically the liver, the kidneys and the lower gastrointestinal tract provide this function. However, it has been shown that a detox diet can aid in removing toxins and keeping the body from absorbing more.

    When toxins build up in the body, they can cause all kinds of problems in the respiratory system, the intestines, the colon and other organs that are essential for good health.

    Basics of a Detox Diet

    What are the basics of a good detox diet?

    A good detox diet will aid in ridding the body of toxins. However, certain principles must be followed. Eating light meals several times a day is one. This is beneficial for helping the body to digest the food that is eaten. Plant foods contain antioxidants; therefore, they should be part of the diet. In order to satisfy hunger and help you to feel full, high fiber foods should be included in the detox diet. This is also advantageous for a healthy colon as well as controlling glucose.

    Olives, seed, nuts and avocados are a good source for essential fats and should definitely be part of your diet. Select from foods that are highly nutritious. They should contain plenty of vitamins and minerals. These foods will help to keep the body functioning as it should. Staying hydrated is another consideration. Drink plenty of fluids such as water and herbal tea.

    Some of the best foods to incorporate into a detox diet are:

    Healthy Fats

    Breakfast foods can include fruit smoothies made with a variety of fresh fruits. For more fiber add oat bran and nuts. Vegetables are perfect for light meals. Cruciferous vegetables are even better. A few of these are cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, turnips, broccoli, watercress and kale.

    Diuretic foods help to rid the body of excess water. Cranberries, cucumber, celery, fennel, asparagus, green beans, watermelon and parsley are diuretics. Due to the diuretic properties of many fruits and vegetables, you should be sure to increase water intake so that you will not become dehydrated. Snacks are an important part of the detox meals that are planned as well. This can include fresh or dried fruit, nuts and seeds.
