It was a pleasant night. Everyone looked happy and almost drunk, to a point where Maggie thought that her problems were going to go away just like her best friend had promised her. It had been a promise she had been holding on to for the last week, hoping that finally people would start seeing her for who she really was after the grand party. She had prayed for that day, a day when the shackles that were made of people’s opinions would be broken and she would be free again, but she forgot one thing however; nothing ever went the way she wanted.

Maggie never thought she was unlucky, she always told her best friend and parents that she was cursed. At twenty five, her life was a mess; she did not have anything to show for her life. All her projects failed and the only thing that seemed to work for her was education. She hadn’t even been employed one single time since she reached sixteen. Everyone seemed to push her away except her best friend and her parents and probably her dog that she was always holding onto.

The fact that she lived far away from her parents and her best friend was a social bird meant that Maggie had a lot of alone time to reflect on how bad her life was. But just when she was about to give up, her best friend swooped in and promised to save the day. She guaranteed results and a new life and possibly endless possibilities for Maggie. If there was something that had made Maggie happier than that then it was immediately forgotten. She trusted her friend and knew that things were going to be alright. What she did not know was that she was in for a big surprise.

Susanna was a popular woman. Everyone loved her company. She was funny, she knew how to party and she was social to everyone. To anyone who needed friends, Susanna was a person to look up to. But while to everyone else in her life was a bed of roses, to her, life was made of thorns. To her, her best friend had the best life, she was smart and witty and she did not have a lot of crap to deal with. She did not have to worry about a lot of things such as whom and how to impress. And she had all the money in the world.

But she was always whining. Susanna would always try to show sympathy but then again there was so much she could take so she decided to help. Her mode of operation was different from other people. She was not as smart as Maggie, but she knew how to drive a point home. So she decided that she was going to teach Maggie a lesson with the party and show her that there were better things in life. To show her that there was something better than stupid friends.

Maggie had money, and she had a lot of resources to make a party to die for. The party as planned, every detail gone through and perfected, and the grand party was thrown for all who cared to join. There was a crowd at the party and Susanna made sure that Maggie met as much people as she could. When it was time for Susanna to thank the people for coming over,

Guys, thanks a lot for coming over, it‘s a real joy to have you but we can’t forget to thank the boss lady for throwing this party. Now why not join us here Maggie, and Maggie went to the stage, all giggly and blushy.

Susanna looked at her friend and smiled, if only she knew what was going to happen, Now you see guys, this lady here has been really great, and she really needs friends, the small murmur in the crowd went dead. Everyone was sure that Susanna was not supposed to say that.

    Susanna! Maggie hissed.

But one thing she does not realize is that friends are not everything. She has the brains and that enough can get her anything but she is blind. The reason why I called this party was to show our friend Maggie that she really did have a lot going for her and that being popular is not the only thing in life, Susanna told the silent crowd.

Maggie looked at the crowd then at her friend and decided that she was ruined. This was not what she expected. She expected to have friends, or something close to that, not for her friend to embarrass her in public. Now all she needed was to get the hell out and find somewhere to go to or somewhere to hide.

Maggie got to her car and drove off in a hurry. No one needed to tell anyone that the party was over. Susanna needed some sleep but among the many people that had attended the party, a young woman silently watched the proceedings. She had been watching Maggie for some time and had not known how to approach her. Now this was the best time to do so and maybe tell her that everything was going to be alright. But as much as she too did not like what Susanna had done, she did agree with her.

She drove after Maggie looking at how she drove. She could tell that the woman was angry and distracted, probably crying and the next thing that would follow was going to be an accident. She had to stop her before something like that happened or she would loss the one person she had wanted to talk to for so long. So she accelerated until she was driving next to Maggie’s car. Maggie was too concentrated on the road to even see her. When she did, she slowed down, allowing her to pass and the lady passed only to stop in front of her.

What the hell do you want and who the hell are you? Maggie asked as soon as she got the chance to talk to the woman.

    I saw what happened earlier.

Okay, good what are you, the media? I have nothing to say. Talk to that bitch Susanna.

    She was right, you know.

Who are you to decide what’s right and what’s wrong?

The name’s Tessa and I am your biggest fan.

Maggie stopped right there. What did this woman mean by that? She did not recall being in the public eye for even a single day and she was already having fans. Maggie was however cautious. She did not want any more surprises.

What do you mean by number one fan? Maggie asked taking a breath. She was so angry to even point at what she was really angry at.

    You want the truth?

    Of course I do.

    I know everything about you.

Maggie started to turn and walk to her car. This woman could be out to ruin her and the best way to deal with her was to ignore her.

Have a good night, Maggie said as she reached for her door.

No wait, Tessa started, I know that sounded creepy but you and I have a lot of similarities. Let’s have coffee or something at a place of your choice and we can talk about that, she said hoping that Maggie would bite.

And she did. After all, she needed someone to talk to and who would do a better job than someone who was genuinely interested in her? So they drove to a place where the two had coffee and Maggie did a lot of talking. Tessa was all ears; she liked the woman and admired a lot of things in her but most of all she was in love with her.

She had established that the moment she first laid eyes on her. By then Maggie did not know a lot about impressing
