Teresa watched with interest as the truck pulled into her neighbor’s driveway. Someone was moving in and she couldn’t help but feel a little uneasy and apprehensive about whoever was about to join the neighborhood. It had been quiet for the last three months and Teresa had grown to appreciate the silence, the peace and tranquility that came with having no neighbor. She didn’t have to worry about anything and was living a better life until now… and she wasn’t sure what awaited her once the new whoever-was-moving-in had settled.

Teresa had lived in that particular house for six years and there was nothing she had not seen. She had had all kinds of neighbors and the more they came the more she felt as if life was against her or something. Not a single neighbor had behaved like a human being. They were all either thugs, or drama queens, or drug addicts or people who liked to mess with her and the list got uglier and uglier. Her previous neighbors had been gang members who had brought a gang fight right to her door, making it the scariest of days in Teresa’s life.

Now as she watched through her kitchen window, Teresa begged the almighty to give her someone who would have at least half a brain for a change. When the truck stopped, a woman jumped out and Teresa almost jumped to go meet her. She had never had a female neighbor. At least not like the one who was squinting in the sun. Deep down she knew that the woman was going to not only be a good neighbor but probably a good friend too. Nothing made Teresa happier than the prospect of having a friend for a neighbor.

She however knew not to judge a book by its cover. So she watched with interest as the woman helped unload her own staff. She looked happy, as if this was going to be her first home ever. Her phone rang a couple of times and it was answered with a lot of enthusiasm. Once or twice, she looked over to Teresa’s house and even though Teresa knew that she couldn’t be seen, she still ducked. That wasn’t the right way to make a first impression. Teresa decided to watch some more before she went over to greet her and welcome her into the neighborhood.

She even decided to bake a cake for the woman. She could tell that the woman was fun and there was nothing Teresa appreciated more than having someone who was fun. It was like having a really good chef in the house. On chefs, she was close to being one. She loved to cook and knew how to… it was the most important thing life had taught her, to charm people with her food. It was a shame that her previous neighbors had not appreciated her food on the first day.

But then again they were drug dealers and they had thought she was a cop. Teresa had never been so angry in her life. They had not even given her a chance to explain who she was and then they had turned her street into a peddler’s station. The word peddler’s station meant a lot of things.
