Tour de Interludes (Book Two) - Linda Lacy
Prologue
You may have caught up with Donna and part of her amazing journey through life in her other book, Sky High Interludes.
In case you missed it, here is her background:
Hello, my name is Donna Allen. They say I have travel running in my veins. That is not my real name because I do not want to identify others, airlines, or events that fellow workers may recall from some of the incidents I refer to. I am proud of all my work, and I would like to think I have changed somebody else’s life for the better. I have quickly learned that reputations will continue to be made by many acts and can be lost by just one.
I am divorced, do a lot of gym work, try to keep a tan on my body, and look smart. I enjoy my job. I am not gay. This book is also a novella.
Juliet, my mother, had left her high school sweetheart for another man she fell in love with when her family relocated to Scottsdale. When the family had moved, Juliet did not know that at that time she was pregnant. Juliet and her new man, Frank, decided to get married, so outside the immediate family nobody actually knew that Frank was not my birth father. It was many years later that I discovered some of mom’s personal papers after she had been killed in a car crash. Frank has been a fabulous father figure for me, and I love him for all he did and hid from me. Eventually when I was in my late teens, Frank remarried. I had just been accepted into a flight training school for air hostesses, and I moved away to my new base in Houston. I have had little contact with my family ever since. We all happily went our separate ways, and now many years later, my life has been full of excitement, challenges, and rewarding activities ever since.
Until quite recently, I spent over eighteen years working as airline cabin crew, the last few years as the senior crew manager on my flights. During this time, I worked for three different airlines. My friends say I have travel in my blood, as most of my adult life I have lived and given everything to my travel career. If you are serious about these jobs, they grab you, they take control of your life and your privacy, and they are very demanding. Airline schedules take ownership of your lifestyle—like it or hate it. Your choice, but if you want to improve your rankings, income, and satisfaction levels, understand the job comes first. If you can’t stand the pressure, get out of the galley, unbuckle your seat belt, and find another job.
Being cabin crew meant long hours, at times frustrating, dealing with unruly passengers; the work schedules certainly made it difficult to have a regular social life. But I made up for all that and more in other ways!
Come join me in the clouds!
Time for a Change
Every now and then, you reassess where you are going and what the future may bring. In my case, I had been through a period where things had not gone well. Karl, my second husband, had decided living with a flight captain was more exciting than life with me. His new lady was a well-endowed buxom blonde and happened to be a senior flight captain of the new wide-body jets. Different strokes for different folks, I guess! I must be getting old because I also found that as a cabin attendant, pushing the 300-400 pound beverage cart up and down the aisle all day does tire a person out. On my recent layover, I even found the bed I was allocated to sleep in had bed bugs, and a visiting basketball team had an all-night party going on right next door. My flight had been through bad weather and suffered a lot of turbulence. I know passengers get very upset in these conditions, but don’t be fooled—the cabin crew can also get scared. When there is so much lightening going on all around, you feel like you have just been trapped with a box of fireworks, and any moment now a big banger may go off! When the captain says over the intercom, Flight attendants, please remain seated,
guess what? That is the sign that some rough stuff is coming our way. Aircraft can’t just fly anywhere they like; they are very much controlled by the air traffic control operators. However, that doesn’t mean that on occasion your captain cannot request a change in
