Sky High - Linda Lacy
Prologue
––––––––
Hello, my name is Donna Allen. They say I have travel running in my veins. That is not my real name because I do not want to identify others, airlines, or events that fellow workers may recall from some of the incidents I refer to. I am proud of all my work, and I would like to think I have changed somebody else’s life for the better. I have quickly learned that reputations will continue to be made by many acts and can be lost by just one.
I am divorced, do a lot of gym work, try to keep a tan on my body, and look smart. I enjoy my job. I am not gay. This book is also a novella.
It Could Have Been a Rough Beginning
––––––––
Juliet, my nineteen-year-old mother, had left her high school sweetheart for another man she fell in love with when her family relocated to Scottsdale. When the family had moved Juliet did not know at that time, but she was pregnant. Juliet and her new man, Frank, decided to get married, so outside the immediate family nobody actually knew that Frank was not my birth father. It was many years later that I discovered some papers after my mother had been killed in a car crash. Frank had been a fabulous father figure to me, and I love him for all he did for me and hid from me. Eventually, when I was in my late teens, Frank remarried. I had just been accepted into a flight training school for air hostesses, and I moved away to my new base in Houston. I have had little contact with my family ever since. We all happily went our separate ways, and now many years later, my life has been full of excitement, challenges, and rewarding activities ever since.
Until quite recently, I spent over eighteen years working as airline cabin crew, the last few years as the senior crew manager on my flights. During this time, I worked for three different airlines. My friends say I have travel in my blood, as most of my adult life I have lived and given everything to my travel career. If you are serious about these jobs, they grab you, they take control of your life and your schedules, and they are very demanding. Airline schedules take ownership of your lifestyle—like it or hate it. Your choice, but if you want to improve your rankings, income, and satisfaction levels, understand the job comes first. If you can’t stand the pressure, get out of the galley, unbuckle your seat belt, and find another job. Otherwise, welcome on board!
Luck of the Draw
––––––––
I knew very little about the airline industry when I put my name down for a cabin crew position. Flying with a big international airline excited me, and at that stage of my life, I was young, looked stunning, was polite, and had my university degree. Because of this, I presumed they would jump at the opportunity to have me on board. Wrong! If all the people who applied for the job stood in line, they would stretch form Central Park down to Wall Street. I had no idea of the popularity of this job, especially when I received a call to come in for a preliminary interview within a week. I guess I can say I flew through
the selection process only to be told later by my senior trainer that only 3% of the candidates got through to the next stage and having a last name starting with A
is what had gotten me up the list! Anyway, I made the cut and felt like I was very special.
Since I was a child, I flew a lot and loved it.
