INTRODUCTION
Anxiety is a horrible thing. It comes in many different forms and for a whole variety of reasons. Doctors like to give all these forms names, but for a lot of us our anxiety can feel so personal that any advice we’re given seems too generic to help. You are unique, after all, as are the reasons your anxiety exists, as are the reasons it continues to rear its head. Nobody can truly understand how this feels but you.
That is why I feel the need to write this book. I am not a doctor, psychologist or a therapist. I’m just a guy who’s been through it. I know how unbearable anxiety can be, both physically and mentally, and I know how terrifyingly impossible breaking free can seem. I also know that it can be beaten.
In this book, I will share the thoughts and techniques I used to defeat my own anxiety. They are not guaranteed, foolproof solutions. They are simply ideas that helped me. Our aim is to help you discover the uniqueness behind your own anxiety and then challenge and defeat it – because I promise you, you CAN defeat this.
If you choose to stick around, I’ll show you how I learned to control my little monster. We’ll discuss a few ideas, share a couple of stories, and then we’ll start the fight. All the answers are already inside you. I’m just going to help you find them.
There’s no rush, no pressure. We can take it as slowly as you like, but together we will move forward, grow stronger and ultimately take back control of your life. So throw out that doubt I know is lurking in the back of your mind. Stop convincing yourself that this book cannot possible apply to you, that you’re too different or far-gone, or that you’re not strong enough. The only thing stopping you from achieving anything is you, and if you choose to come along with me and you do not give up, then I absolutely promise you that you can beat this.
In the end, this all comes down to a choice. Are you going to simply accept the hand you’ve been dealt and continue letting this thing control you, or are you going to stand up and fight with me? Believe in yourself. Amaze yourself, because you really can do anything you want to. It’s just a choice.
To cite that quote that relentlessly keeps popping up on the internet:
"A year from now, you’ll wish you started today"
So let’s start today.
CHAPTER ONE: BEFORE WE BEGIN
As I said in the introduction, there are innumerable types of anxiety. No matter what you have - social anxiety, panic attacks, general anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, some unnamed quirk - or how severely it affects you, know that it can be beaten.
Before we start that fight, however, I’m going to briefly tell you my own story. Hopefully, after understanding what I have been through myself, you will see that - no matter how impossible the task ahead may seem - it is still undeniably doable. Similarly, once you have heard my story, all the ideas and techniques I share with you later should carry more weight, because you will know that they work. That’s the intention anyway.
Again, don’t worry if you can’t specifically relate to my journey at all. The origins of my anxiety and its quirks are as unique to me as yours are to you. This is purely about motivation, to prove to you that it can be done.
MY STORY
I was seventeen when it began. I started feeling physically sick for no determinable reason. It started happening so often and so randomly that I eventually stopped going outside altogether. I began turning down friends that wanted to hang out, wouldn’t take the dog for a walk, wouldn’t do anything… just in case I felt sick while I was out.
Eventually, I decided to venture outside again. An indescribably horrible feeling took over me the second I stepped out the door. It happened again the next day too, and the day after that, and
