You’ve said that you don’t get to indulge in writer’s block. What’s your secret?
I’ve worked as a copywriter as my day job for a long time, so five days a week I have no choice but to write. When you have to write to eat and pay rent, you soon learn that it’s possible to push through and get it done. When I’m working on a fiction project, I’ll set myself deadlines and word counts – I have spreadsheets! It’s how I’ve trained my brain to get the work done.
Do you have any writing routines?
I’ve convinced myself that I have to start early or I can’t work at all (which I don’t recommend). I’ll get up, have coffee, breakfast, open my laptop and go. If I get started early and treat writing fiction like it’s my day job, I can normally write for about six hours. If I do ever get stuck, I find changing platforms helpful. If I’ve been writing in Word, I’ll switch to my Notes app or even hand-write for a while. I don’t know why it helps but it does.
