    Episode 5: Ice Storm

The Relentless flew across the face of the sea, chasing a dark spot on the distant line where sea met sky.

Captain Lucy Smokeheart surveyed her crew, all hard at work on the business of keeping their ship seaworthy. Lia Feng supervised a gaggle of spindly sailors as they mended spare sails and checked ropes for fraying. Bald-Chinned Bill rubbed sweat from under his nose and then returned to scrubbing out a cannon that hadn't been clean enough for Mordecai's taste. Slow Morris was below in the galley, but the scent of his bone soup drifted on the sea air, making Lucy's stomach grumble pleasantly.

Rojay the monkey was high in the rigging, as usual, this time trying to take apart a compass purloined from who-knew-where. Lucy hoped it was Lia Feng's, given the needling the quartermaster had been doing over the lost Spanish galleon.

Lucy's eyes fell on Pudding. He was at the wheel of the ship, guiding the ship so it followed close after the Wisp. He lifted his spyglass, freckled brow furrowed, and then set it down to make a few tiny marks in his notebook. Lucy crossed the deck to clap him on the back.

How are we doing? They still too fast for us? she asked him with careful indifference.

I thought they'd have lost us by now, Captain. We couldn't keep up when they set out from Port St. Never. Pudding peered through the spyglass again. We're keeping pace with them just fine now, though. Not like before. It's almost like… like they're going slower on purpose so we don't lose 'em.

Lucy did her best to keep her face smooth, but she did a bad job of it, so her knowing smirk shone through anyway. Imagine that, she said. She rolled a black pearl between her fingers — the one the fire lizard of Skull Island had given her.

Pudding bit his lip. "Are they letting us? he asked. I mean… did you— is there something—"

Lucy winked at him. Maybe we're just a little luckier than we were before. I'm very lucky, you know.

But the wind — Pudding stopped and looked down. I mean, they were so much faster before, like they weren't sailing from the same wind as us. Like magic.

Well maybe they aren't anymore, Lucy said with a superior air.

"You know something. What did you
