Episode 6: The Governor's Ball

I can't believe they just left me behind, Diego said. He sat in the lines above the ship, feet swinging free. Below, the crew of the Relentless were busy keeping the ship safely clear of the remaining floes left from Ilsa's ice sheet.

Lucy sat next to him, throwing crumbs of stale bread to the sea birds. I can't believe Robert got married and didn't tell me, she said. I won't believe it just because that woman says so.

She hadn't said Anja's name in the few hours since she had been transformed back from a monkey. At the fore of the ship, Anja was holding court, clad now in a simple dress borrowed from one of the crew. A circle of sailors sat on the deck around her feet, captivated, as she regaled them with a story. From where Lucy sat, though, she couldn't hear the words.

Lucy threw a crumb at a particularly close bird, as if trying to knock it from midair. The crumb bounced off the gull's wing, startling it.

I guess you can never really know where someone's loyalties are, Diego said. Not for sure. The wind ruffled his curls.

You never know for sure what someone will say or do. Lucy frowned down on Anja and her story circle.

Maybe they have reasons.

Maybe she's lying. What does she know, anyway? I bet being a monkey scrambles your brain. Lucy threw another crumb at another bird, even harder this time. She missed.

C'mon, Lucy, we have to follow them. There was no real conviction in his voice; Diego knew he'd lost already.

What? Follow Robert?

No, the Wisp! We have to get the Wisp back.

There's no reason for that. We have the dart, and anyway we'd never catch them by now. It's been too long.

But what's a captain without a ship? Diego kicked at the air.

Lucy adopted a superior air. It's terrible to find your crew aren't really loyal to you, she said. But I guess that's pirating for you, you can never be too comfortable.

Wait'll it happens to you, Diego mumbled.

My crew is different, Lucy said.

Lucy, Diego said, We should really talk about—

Wait, hang on. she leaned forward to look down
