A Grand DAY OUT

He waited for people to join him, but nobody did

Hi, Luke, it’s Angie. From number 27.’ ‘I know, I recognised your voice,’ replied Luke. ‘Shouldn’t you be busy getting ready? It’s the old folks’ trip to Exmouth tomorrow, isn’t it?’

‘Yes. That’s why I’m calling.’

As Angie started telling him about a series of minor mishaps, he guessed exactly where the phone call might be heading.

And a few minutes later, he was proved right.

‘I won’t be able to go, so I was hoping you could take my place,’ she said tentatively.

He paused for a moment, then said, ‘Of course. I’d be very happy to help.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Of course I’m sure.’ He wondered why she sounded surprised. ‘I think I can handle it.’

‘Great. I’ll email you the details. Thanks again, Luke.’

Luke shook his head. At least she hadn’t invited him round for dinner like she had a month ago -– and the month before that.
