    Episode 7: Prisoner's Dilemma

Diego held Lucy with her arms pinned behind her back, calling out to the Navy to come and get her. What are you, soldiers or snails? Step it up! It took a second for the truth to sink in; a second Lucy didn't really have to spare, alas.

The soldiers' boots rattled against the pavement as the platoon of soldiers rushed toward them, bayonets still raised and muzzles aimed squarely at the two of them.

And there it was. Lucy's brain caught up with the unexpected turn of events that had just transpired: Diego was giving her up to the Navy to save his own skin. The realization dazzled Lucy with mingled amazement and disappointment, like fireworks in the night that unexpectedly burn your house down.

Lucy growled and twisted her way out of Diego's grasp. Once she slipped free, she wheeled around and punched him in the eye but good. Traitor, she spat at him. Her brief act of vengeance didn't carry her very far, though. She kicked at Diego's stomach, but he leaped back and away, unharmed. And then the Navy was there, surrounding them.

She brandished her cutlass, cutting in quick circles all around to keep the enemy at a safe distance. They crowded together, backing safely away from the bite of her steel.

Their commanding officer, a short woman with acorn-brown hair in a tight bun, leveled her musket to point square at Lucy. Drop the blade, she said, Unless you've been wishing for a few more holes in your skin.

Lucy was certainly brave; one might venture to say on the side of foolhardy. But even Lucy knew a lost cause when she saw one. There were too many enemies this time, and they were too well-armed. Lucy lowered her sword, then bent down to set it on the ground.

One more thing to try, perhaps. Come and take me unarmed, she said, I dare you. One on one! Show me you're not a bunch of sniveling cowards. She raised her fists.

From somewhere in the back, the group of soldiers produced a set of heavy chains and manacles. Maybe another day, the commander said. Here, give me your wrists.

Lucy backed up a half-step, looking at the black iron of the restraints. Thanks, but no. Heavy jewelry isn't really my style.

The commander's chin rose up. Bind her, she said.

The soldiers crowded around to shackle Lucy. No, no! Lucy struggled, clawing and biting like an angry mountain lion. She got in a good scratch on the acorn woman's cheek, and tore one of the other soldier's coats so his sleeve fell off his coat.

It took eight of them to do it, but in the end they succeeded. Lucy's hands and feet were chained together. She raised her hands to look at the shackles.

The famous Lucy Smokeheart, said the acorn woman with deep satisfaction. "I
