    Episode 10: Traitor's Return

Kafka Bay wasn't the sort of place Lucy would go on purpose under any other circumstances. Not that it was dangerous, by any means. It was just dreadfully, painfully boring, like polishing brass or talking about taxes.

A fishing village had sprung up on its shore some centuries ago, and the village remained there, essentially unchanged to the present day. As such, the place wasn't much to look at — a huddle of sedate, neatly kept huts, a marina filled with fishing boats, and not much else.

All the same, Lucy spent long hours watching it as the Navy's ship bore them closer and closer. This was no trading post, nor did any merchants conduct business here. Lucy wasn't even sure there was an inn or pub or other common gathering spot to be found.

Lucy climbed down, more than a little resentful.

Lucy, there is a matter we must speak of. It involves my sister.

Lucy groaned. Of course it does.

Anja brushed her skirt, though it was already perfectly clean. We are nearing a crossroads. My sister is chasing us, trying to determine where my Robert hid the stone I took from her, and we must prevent her from finding it.

Uh-huh. Lucy leaned out over the railing of the ship and watched the foam where the sea rushed against the hull. She hoped to see some flash of a mermaid tail, but there was nothing there but empty water.

This is a very serious matter, Anja said. If she takes the stone back, she will awaken Great-Great-Great-Great… Great… Uncle Snorri, and so will begin a thousand years of ice and darkness.

Lucy shrugged. I just want to find my brother, she said. Your family business is your business. Keep me out of it.

Anja gazed at her, eyes flat. If you say so, she said. "But remember, you are my family now, and my family
