Port St. Never - Andrea Phillips

    Episode 3: Port St. Never

Captain Lucy Smokeheart and Diego the Vengeful squared off on the deck of his ship, the Wisp. They stared at one another with more or less equivalent degrees of disbelief. How did you get my monkey? Diego demanded again.

His crew had stopped bombarding the walls of Port St. Never with cannon fire. Instead they circled loosely around the two captains, watching their exchange with keen interest.

Rojay is a stupid name for a monkey, Lucy said. She glared, with no noticeable effect.

Diego scrubbed his fingers through his rough mop of curls. Why, what do you call him? Admiral Funnypants or something stupid like that?

Diego's hands dropped to his sides. He turned to stare at Lucy again.  You can't be serious, he said. Are you telling me this really is the legendary Captain Lucy Smokeheart?

The one and only! Lucy said. She planted one hand on her hip and stuck her chin high into the air. Now cease your attack on Port St. Never at once, or I'll—

Lia Feng coughed delicately. Tiny rubies in today's golden hair sticks glinted in the light from the ship's lanterns. Lucy, she said, This matter is beneath you. Let me handle it.

Lucy glared at Diego a little more, just for good measure. Fine, she said at last. Just make sure he doesn't get in our way. She turned to the monkey. Hey there, little guy, she called. Come on, time to go home! The monkey leaped onto her shoulder and clung to her hair.

Lucy arched a smug eyebrow at
