    Chapter 1

After the limousine backed into his driveway, Tim stepped out into the crisp, nighttime air. The driver popped the trunk and rolled down his window.

I’ll get my stuff, Tim said to the driver as he pulled the small suitcase and laptop bag out of the trunk. He returned to the driver and said, Here’s a little something for you. Thank you for everything.

It was my pleasure, sir, the driver said dispassionately as he pocketed the twenty-dollar bill Tim had just handed over.

After the limo started to move away, Tim glanced at his watch. She’s probably still up, he mumbled, feeling somewhat disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to surprise his wife the way he had done on many of the previous occasions when he had returned from a business trip.

He opened the door, carried his luggage into the foyer, and closed the door as quietly as he could.

    Amanda called out
