The oven door banged closed and she realized Ian was staring at her. He stepped in behind her, reached around to grab her arms and lifted the bottle to the table. Flipping down the bottle opener-looking bit, he propped it against the side of the glass by the cork, and guided her hand upward, levering the cork from the bottle. With a quick yank, the cork was free, and his hands slid down her arms to rest on her hips.

She could feel his warm breath on her ear as she poured the wine into two glasses. She also felt something else pressing against her lower back as he held her close.

“The turkey's going to be a while, and we have some time before we need to start preparing anything else,” he said, his hands sliding under her shirt and migrating slowly upwards.

“What about the wine?” she asked, not really giving a damn about the wine.

“The wine needs to breathe.” A hand cupped each breast and squeezed tightly.

Her knees melted below her, and it was only her grip on the table and his strong arms that kept her from falling to the floor.

His fingers closed around her nipples, pinching gently and rolling them back and forth. Anna moaned and leaned her head back to rest on his shoulder.

“Does that feel good?” he asked, increasing the pressure.

“Oh yes,” she whimpered, “it feels so good when you touch me like that.” His fingers clamped down hard, and bolt of lightning shot straight down to her sex by way of her stomach. Joe had never been so bold, and she became aware of a whole new world of pleasure just waiting for her here in this room.

Chapter One

ANNA WASN'T SURE exactly what she'd expected to happen, but it definitely wasn't this. In one version, she imagined him laughing and walking back to his easel, trying to pass it off as an awkward joke. In another, she pictured him jumping on her and ravaging her completely.

In reality, he just crouched where he was, stock still and not moving.

Anna sat up and hugged her knees to her chest on the bench. She suddenly felt very exposed.

I'm sorry, she said. Not knowing what was happening.

Ian moved to sit on the bench, not close enough to be touching her, but close enough that she could feel his presence there beside her.

No, it's nothing you've done, he sighed. I'm just feeling a little confused right now.

She looked over at him and saw he had one hand clutching the other, fingers worrying at the ring finger of his left hand.

I used to be married, he started, and then trailed off into silence. His gaze dropped to the floor.

Anna placed a hand on his shoulder.

You don't have to explain, she said.

No, I haven't really talked to anyone about it since it happened. He cleared his throat and stood. Walking a few feet away from her, he stopped and stared off into the upper loft.

Anna took advantage of the pause to pick up the robe and slip it back on.

It was a car accident, he finally said. Two years ago on New Year's Eve. She was coming home from a party, and I guess she'd been drinking a lot. She wrapped her car around a tree near our home. Thankfully no one else was hurt, and the police told me that she'd been killed instantly and hadn't suffered at all. Her airbag was faulty, and since that was ruled to be the cause of death, I got a large payout from the insurance company. That's how I bought this studio and gallery. Painting was just a hobby back then, but now it's my life.

Anna didn't know what to say, so she stood quietly behind him.

"I don't really even remember why I wasn't at the party with her. I wasn't very happy back then for all the usual reasons. I was an office drone at a dead-end job. We'd been having our issues
