Chapter One

NAKED, BLOODY, AND unconscious, Lilith found Gavin hanging on silver chains, slumped over with his chin touching his pale and blood-streaked chest.

Oh, my God! Lilith cried as she raced over to him. Oh, Gavin! Have you been here this whole time? What in the hell happened to you?

She kept muttering questions as she continued to look for a way to get him down.

Oh God, oh God, she kept wailing. I'll get you down, Gavin! Just hang on a second!

Glancing frantically around for something, anything, that might help her, it finally occurred to her that she could put on some gloves that would allow her to touch the silver chains and possibly just break them. She was strong and could definitely break them, but the silver material created a bit of a problem for her since vampires didn't do well with silver.

Racing into her walk-in closet, she grabbed a pair of thick gloves and put them on her hands. Careful not to let any other part of her body touch the chains, she gripped them in both hands and pulled hard. Due to her strength, she was able to snap the strong chains in half and catch Gavin when he fell from the beam.

She couldn't imagine who would have done this to him. He was so weak that he had passed out. In fact, she could sense that he was very close to death. She had to get some blood into him.

Using her fingernail, she slit her wrist and held it up to Gavin's mouth. He didn't respond so she opened his mouth and allowed some of the blood to drip down into it. Still nothing. But she wouldn't give up.

Positioning his head so that his mouth was open, she held her wrist to it and kept the blood dripping until he suddenly twitched. Fastening his mouth over the cut in her wrist, he began to drink the blood from her in earnest. She let him take as much as she dared before she started to feel a bit weak herself.

Slowly, she began to pull her wrist away from Gavin's mouth. But he wouldn't let go. He was starving, and she was his route to survival. Finally, she hissed at him and pushed him hard, knocking him backwards on the floor.

I'm sorry, Gavin, but I can't let you kill me, she said softly.

She noticed he was shivering rather violently. Quickly, she pulled a folded blanket from the foot of her bed and wrapped it around him. Rocking him, she tried to calm him and warm him at the same time.
