It will take the complete amulet to halt her father's plan to lock her away forever.

It all started with an old-fashioned typewriter. When the family brought it home, all those stories and characters rolling around in her head could finally get out. The press and click of the keys satisfied in their own right, but when she pulled out a finished page, she knew this was for her. Since then, she's graduated to a laptop, but the stories still find a way out. She's a breast cancer survivor, a teacher, a wife, a mother, and from the very beginning—a storyteller. Always a hint humorous and honest to a fault, she loves to make people laugh and smile. Her goal in life is to achieve tact and stop procrastinating. The battle wages on.

    Chapter 1

PIECES. LIFE COMES at a person in pieces, year-by-year, and day-by-day—sometimes minute-by-minute. And for Hollyn Oates, lately, those life pieces were mostly jagged and broken.

She looked at the piece of broken ruby-red crystal in her hand and turned it back and forth in the stray beam of light of a utilitarian, metal desk lamp. One with a long, skinny arm stretched out beyond the base. She watched how the light cast a yellowish shadow on the desktop. It was hard to believe that this shard had the potential to free her from her father forever. Of course, it would free her if she could find the rest of it to make it whole. Right now, she wasn’t any closer to that than she was yesterday. That wouldn’t matter so much if she had more than two weeks to make it happen.

Eleven days remaining. With no leads.

It felt impossible to do it on her own.

A key slid into the lock of the front door, and a click sounded right before the door opened with a low creak, reminding Hollyn that she wasn’t on her own.

    Another dead end.

Kai Iona stepped inside the motel room and shut the door quickly behind him. Hollyn read the frustration as he dropped the borrowed car keys with a loud clatter on the TV stand.

Bertie waddled out of the bathroom, her beanie firmly in place. She cleared her throat and announced to the room, I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so, you big toe.

Yet, Bertie’s moment of glory was interrupted by a sleek chunk of black Labrador bounding through the bathroom door, jostling the seagull into the doorframe before she fell backward onto her feathered behind. The dog leaped toward Kai and landed on the floor in front of him. In an instant, his paws were on Kai’s chest, and his tongue was on his cheek.

Hey, there, Otis! Who’s a good boy! Yes, you are! You’re a good boy!

Though they were on the road now, they had taken a side trip back to Asscrack to pick up Kai’s dog. The reunion had shown Hollyn a different side of Kai. She was still hesitant to trust him even a little bit, but seeing how much love Otis showered on Kai made Hollyn think. Didn’t animals have a second sense about people? Would Otis trust an untrustworthy owner?

The jury was still out, and she didn’t have time to figure it out. Eleven days.

    No information at all?

Kai swiped a ball from its hiding place behind the TV and tossed it to the other side of the small room. Otis bounded after it, squeezing it between his teeth, and bringing it back for Kai to throw again.

As he repeated the game, he said, Not a thing.

Do you trust this source? I mean, does your source usually give good information?

Usually, he’s the best, but he explained that the riddle didn’t provide enough information to narrow it down.

Hollyn felt the weight of the task heavy in her chest. What do we do now?

Kai threw the ball again and said, I guess we still head toward the west coast. I’ve got a few more contacts. Maybe someone else will have more concrete details.

I have a few contacts I could reach out to. I’m pretty damn good at what I do.

I don’t doubt it, but your father could know about those contacts, too.

Then, what do we do? We can’t keep driving around blindly for weeks or months. We only have eleven days remaining. Could she emphasize it any harder?

The ball toss bounced off the wall and under one of the beds, and Otis whined as he fought to get to it. Kai fell back on the other bed, staring at the ceiling. Hollyn crossed the room and sat beside him, sitting in silence as her thoughts raced to try to figure out a plan of action.

She felt Kai’s hand on her back as he pinched her t-shirt and pulled her back to lay beside him. She thought about resisting, but in the end, she slipped backward and eased down next to him. Their gazes met, and Hollyn felt her heart pick up speed as he stared at her.

We’re going to find the other piece, and you will use the amulet to protect yourself from anyone who would even dare show an intention of harming you.

As warm flutters began to creep through Hollyn’s midsection, she repressed the emotion that began to boil to the surface. He was saying exactly what she needed to hear, but she couldn’t shake the doubts still crawling through her mind.

He wanted the amulet, too. He could be using her to get what he wanted. She just didn’t want to be lied to anymore, even if the liar was the most attractive man she’d ever seen.

The kiss they’d shared rushed back to her, and she felt the swirl of emotions that she’d felt then. The excitement of the intimate touch had thrilled her. She never let herself get close to others because she couldn’t, not without risking getting caught by her
