Have I lost my freaking mind? Secret wondered. I just helped turn an ill, 19-year old human girl over to a vampire who is centuries old!

Well, now’s not the time to start second guessing myself, she mused. That little voice there in the back of my head needs to shut up. This is Suzette’s only chance to live beyond three months and I still feel strongly that it was the right thing to do.

Finally, she got out of the car and went up to her front porch. As she went to turn the key to unlock the door, a chill crept over her body. Becoming as still as a statue, she focused all of her senses. Something wasn’t right. She was so frightened in that moment that she couldn’t nail down what the danger was or even where it was coming from. However, she was positive that she needed to get back into her car and drive away as quickly as possible.

Now, if she could just make herself move, but terror held her paralyzed. Quietly, she slipped the key back out of the lock. Suddenly, she could feel someone just on the other side of her door.

Someone was inside her house!

And they were waiting for her.

Sandra Ross

The moment Sandra Ross held her first romance novel when she was ten, she knew she was going to write romance. At thirty now, a prolific reader and a freelance writer, she's since then expanded her preferences from just romance to romance with a dash of now trending sub-genres—paranormal , fantasy, sci-fi even, and erotica. She loves challenging herself and would write on a dare. On a normal day, she would be found in her herb garden collecting spices for her kitchen or ingredients for her potions; in her huge eclectic Provencal kitchen with the big modern oven cooking pots and pans of food for her family of one husband and three kids (an ardent daughter and two boisterous sons) that'll probably last for weeks; in her library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and an e-reader in her hands as she reads the latest erotic hit; or scribbling pages upon pages of different erotic lifestyles, searching for the one that feels like it was inspired by just the right mix of passion, story line, and sex. Aside from these activities, the rest of the time she'd be found in front of her laptop typing the latest Sandra Ross concoction for her readers.

    CHAPTER ONE

EVEN THOUGH KANE could have transported them to the hospital much faster, Secret insisted on driving them there to visit Suzette. She was nervous enough about the upcoming conversation that she would be having with Suzette in just a few minutes. The drive there might offer her the chance to gather her thoughts and figure out what she was going to say to the young woman. The last thing that she wanted to do was to go in and frighten the poor girl to death.

Ouch, she thought. Poor choice of words.

At any rate, she had committed to at least letting Suzette know that there was another option to dying. Well, actually she would still be dying, but at least she would also be up and walking around. Nobody would have to know that she was only technically dead because she would still have a life. Minette wouldn't have to lose her daughter unless she chose to turn her back on what her Suzette would become.

Are you ready to go in? Kane's voice broke through her thoughts.

Secret realized that she was just sitting there, her hands still gripping the steering wheel, even though they had already arrived at the hospital. She glared at Kane, tried to clear her thoughts and instead focus on the task ahead of her.

No, she replied. I'm not sure I will ever be ready for something like this, but it must be done. I would never forgive myself if I didn't at least offer her this chance.

Kane nodded in understanding and waited for her to make the first move in exiting the car.

Okay, let's go, she finally said and opened the car door.

He reached for her hand and, together, they walked into the hospital. Secret had called ahead to get Suzette's room number, so they were able to go straight up to her room without calling any attention to themselves. In fact, it turned out to be quite easy getting from the lobby up to Suzette's room. Another thing that worked in their favor was that Suzette's being confined in a private room.

Finally, they reached the room. The door was halfway closed and the room was dimly lit. Quietly, Secret peered into the room. She saw Suzette, reclined in the hospital bed. Her eyes were closed but the television was on, although on low volume. It was difficult to tell if she was sleeping or not.

Just as Secret turned to tell Kane that they might need to come another time, Suzette spoke to them.

    Hello?

Secret exchanged an anxious look with Kane and they walked into the room.

Despite the illness, Suzette was still very lovely. With dark, shoulder-length hair parted on the side, her large eyes were a soulful deep brown with the ability to catch and hold you in their gaze. Her lips were naturally full without the aid of any artificial product.

Oh, it would indeed be sad to see this beautiful young girl leave the world so soon, Secret thought.

Hi, Suzette. I'm Secret Lavalle, a friend of your mother's and this is Kane Broussard, a friend of mine.

Secret! Oh please come in! Mama's told me all about you! Suzette said excitedly. It's so great to meet you! And you, too, Mr. Broussard.

Oh, please, call me Kane, he said, turning his brilliant smile on. And it is wonderful to meet you as well.

Is your mother still here somewhere? Secret asked.

No, I finally got her to go home and get some rest, Suzette said. "She's just been so upset and worried about me that I'm afraid it's taking a toll on her health. So I insisted that she go home and rest tonight."

That's very wise of you, Suzette, Secret said. You know, she just doesn't want to waste a single moment with you.

I know, Suzette whispered. She told you then?

Secret nodded and took Suzette's hand in her own.

We met this afternoon and she explained it all to me.

I'm so relieved that she has someone like to you to talk to, Secret. You can help her to get through this when the time comes.

Of course I'll do anything that I can, Suzette, but I came here tonight to tell you that there may be another option for you, if you want to take it.

Suzette simply stared at Secret for a couple of minutes, as if she had been unable to comprehend the words that had been spoken.

I'm not sure I understand, she finally said with a bit of a puzzled smile on her face.

Pulling up a chair so that she could sit by Suzette, Secret looked directly into those mesmerizing eyes. Still gripping her hand, she started to speak.

Suzette, I'm not going to lie to you, she began. This will be one of the most fantastic and unbelievable things that you'll ever hear. But I promise you that everything I'm about to say to you is the truth. I would never toy with you about something so important. All I'm asking is that you'll give me the chance to explain it all and not throw us out of your room. Do you think you can do that?

Well, I can't imagine that I would ever throw you out of my room, Secret, no matter what you may have to say to me, Suzette laughed weakly. Plus, I'm definitely open to hearing about anything that might give me a longer lifespan that a couple of months. So please, continue.

    Secret took a deep breath.

Okay, Suzette, she began. Do you know what a vampire is?

To say that Suzette looked startled would have been an understatement.

Um, sure, she said slowly. Everyone knows what vampires are.

Good, Secret said. Then this will be much simpler to explain to you because, if you know what a vampire is, you also know that they are immortal. Very few things can actually kill them. They don't get sick, Suzette. Any pain they feel is quite temporary and they don't die easily.

Yes, yes, I do know all of that, but what does that have to do with me?

Okay, here's the really hard part, Suzette, Secret said as she looked deeply into those beautiful eyes and held even more tightly to her hand.

You can leave all of this sickness, pain, and impending death behind you, if you choose.

Secret, I still don't understand what you're saying.

What I'm telling you is that you don't have to die from this tumor, Suzette. You can become a vampire and live forever.

The silence in the hospital room was deafening. Secret continued to hold Suzette's gaze while she and Kane waited for her response.

I... uh... I can't decide whether you're trying to cheer me up in some weird way or if you're just being cruel without knowing it, she finally said as tears formed in her eyes. Why would you do that?

    "I promise you, Suzette, that
