Secret had gone to sleep in Kane’s arms the night before more relaxed than she had been in a very long time. Yes, her life was still about to drastically change, but it was okay now because she still had her best friend and she had the man that she had always dreamed she would find one day. Maybe life wasn’t going to be so bad after all.

Just after midnight, Secret started to moan lightly in her sleep. Kane tightened his hold on her to try to calm her, but that only made her start to flail about while moaning louder.

“Secret,” Kane said quietly. “It’s okay, my love. You’re just dreaming. I am here, sweetheart. Everything is fine.”

As he held her and talked to her, it seemed as if her body was suddenly on fire. He didn’t want to even hazard a guess as to what her body temperature was right then. Leaping up from the bed, he stretched her out on her back just as she began to go into a violent seizure.

What the hell? he thought.

There had rarely been humans that he couldn’t help when it came to a physical malady but nothing he did seemed to stop whatever was attacking her.

All at once, it hit him like a wall of bricks. He knew exactly what was happening! The reason he hadn’t spotted it instantly was because he had never been involved in anything like it.

CHAPTER ONE

SHE LAY VERY still just in case she had not heard him correctly. Sometimes she did that heard what she wanted to hear for whatever reason.

Could... could you say that again? she whispered.

I...love...you, he repeated, with a kiss between each word.

Secret was struck dumb. She was seriously incapable of speech. Even worse, to her horror, her eyes were filling with tears.

Did I upset you? Kane asked, the concern evident in both his face and voice.

Still not trusting her voice, she vehemently shook her head.

Then what are these tears all about? he asked, tenderly wiping away each one that slid from her eyes.

It's just that I... I... I love you, too, she sobbed.

Ah, I see, he said, looking both slightly amused and affectionate at the same time. So these are tears of happiness then?

Y-y-yes, she sniffed as she tried to regain her composure.

Alright, he said, as he gathered her close in his arms again. Just as long as they are happy tears.

He continued to hold her until she had quieted and was breathing softly against his chest. Neither of them spoke for a while, preferring to enjoy just being together. Finally, Secret felt confident enough to speak.

You must think I'm incredibly silly, she said. But I just never dreamed that you actually felt that way about me.

No, no, my love, he demurred. I don't find you silly at all! In fact, it is delightfully endearing that you did not expect me to profess my love for you.

She giggled a little. I just love the way you talk, she said. It's so formal and otherworldly.

That is my European descent, he replied. Someday, I shall tell you all about my past if you would like to hear it.

I would definitely love to hear about your past, she said rather excitedly. We should do that soon.

Then we shall, he said. However, I want to hear all about everything that has gone on with you while we have been apart.

Ah, yes, Secret said. I do need to tell you everything, but I had hoped to enjoy you a bit longer before having to ruin it.

Now that does not sound good, he said, frowning.

Gathering her into his arms and pulling her even closer to him, he used one hand to cover them with her sheet and comforter.

Tell me everything, he said.

Secret started talking and just kept on going until she had filled him on everything that had happened in those three short days. Even though he remained quiet throughout her recitation, she could feel the tension growing in his body. Only when she had finished talking did she hazard a glance at his face.

He looked a lot like a thundercloud. Or maybe it was closer to a volcano that was just getting ready to erupt. At any rate, he was obviously furious.

For what seemed like a long time, Kane was silent. Secret actually started to get a bit concerned about him when he continued to just lay there holding her like she was going to vanish if he let her go. Finally, he spoke in a quiet, deadly voice.

Secret, I am so very sorry that I could not be there for you, he said. If the situation had been different, you would not have needed to go through all of that.

I completely understand, Kane! Seriously, I do! It all turned out just fine, though. Mari was there for me and I was in a safe place with her. Also, Suzette is now cured and has a new life ahead of her. Things just happened, that's all. None of us could have known that this would happen. Okay, well maybe I should have seen it coming because of the whole being psychic thing, but it just doesn't always work that way. But please don't blame yourself, okay?

He sighed heavily. I know that you are right, but it pains me greatly to know that you are being terrorized in such a way. I want to discuss your health issues in more detail but first, tell me about these roses. Do you still have them?

I do, unless someone sneaked in and took them since I was last here. I never even made it to the kitchen when Mari brought me home tonight.

Then I would like to see them, he replied. After that, we will talk about your health issues. I may be able to enlighten you on that.

Seriously? You might know what's wrong with me? Secret asked in a puzzled voice.

Yes, he said shortly.

But you want to see the roses first?

Yes, if you don't mind, he replied.

Sure, okay, she said. But you do realize that means that we have to get up, right?

Yes, sadly, I do, but I promise you that I will make it up to you.

I believe you, she laughed.

Rolling over onto her stomach, she kissed him soundly on the mouth and slid off of the bed. Strolling naked across the room, she smiled to herself with the certainty that Kane was watching her every step. Opening her closet door, she walked in and located a sexy silk kimono. Slipping into it, she pitched his jeans to him so that he would be covered somewhat when they went down to her kitchen.

Laughing as he caught them, he said, You know, you really should start closing those mini-blinds of yours in the back of your home. Then we could walk around without worrying over covering our bodies.

I suppose you're right, she said. In the future, I shall try to remember to do that, especially when I know that you're going to be here.

She took his hand and they went down the hallway and descended the stairs. Secret's mood was suddenly becoming a little less excited as they got closer to the back area of her home. Kane instantly noticed. Putting his arm around her, he pulled her close against him.

Do not worry, my love, he said. I am here and nothing is going to hurt you.

Yeah, I know, she said. But it was just so creepy. I can't even explain it.

Then they rounded the corner and the breakfast bar came in sight. Secret came to a standstill when she spotted the roses on it. Kane slowed a bit, then continued over to look at the flowers more closely. Some of the petals had started to drop and were littering
