Chapter One

I HOPE THIS this isn't a horrible mistake, Ashley thought as she lifted her hand to release the large knocker onto the mahogany double doors. The best thing about this job is that she was finally in a position that could be long-term if it all worked out.

She had agreed to be a personal assistant to the celebrated mystery writer Anthony Lang. It was a wonderful way to further her own writing career, but there was a twist. Mr. Lang was an amazing writer and he knew his stuff, so to speak, but he was also blind. Ashley didn't know any more about his background than anyone else.

He used to be a top-rated profiling agent for the FBI. He had had a hand in solving some very well-known cases. Then, during one of those cases, something had gone terribly wrong. Lang had nearly been killed, but he had survived. He lost his sight as a result and there was no hope of it ever being restored.

At least that's what she had been able to uncover in her research of him.

He had decided to hire a personal assistant to help him write his next book. Ashley had applied and, after a telephone conversation, she was hired.

There were some stipulations with her employment. It was a live-in position so that she could be available whenever he felt like writing. He had warned her that, at times, he liked to write all night or during odd hours. Lang didn't have a schedule that he kept when writing. He wrote when he had ideas that needed to be recorded.

Part of Ashley's job was to transcribe Lang's recorded words and enter them in the computer. She was also needed to perform extensive research on whatever Lang needed for his book. That was fine because research was one of her areas of expertise. Ashley only held a degree in journalism, but she had picked up other talents through her various jobs.

In reality, she hated everything that was involved with news reporting, and wanted to know how to write in an interesting style. She wasn't sure that she would find that in Creative Writing 101.

Ashley let the knocker strike the door and heard it echo throughout the mansion. The door opened very quickly and Ashley suddenly faced a grandmotherly woman who looked at her with a bright smile on her face.

You must be Ashley! Come in, come in. Anthony has been waiting for you!

Well, yes, I am Ashley Randall.

Ashley stepped into an enormous foyer with a twin staircase that led upstairs to another floor.

We've been so excited that you were coming! Did you bring luggage? If so, Henry will get it for you and take it up to your suite. You must be exhausted after that long trip. Let's get you settled in the library and I'll bring you some tea, or would you prefer coffee?

Um, coffee would be wonderful, Ashley replied.

She was amazed at her room. There were floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that held many books, as and a large window that occupied one entire wall. It looked out onto one of the most beautifully-manicured gardens she had ever seen.

Just then her hostess returned with her coffee.

I'm so sorry that I neglected to introduce myself before, she said. I'm Helene and I look after this place as well as Anthony. Here's your coffee, dear.

Just then a different voice spoke.

That will be all for now, Helene. Thank you. Ms. Randall and I need to talk and get acquainted.

Chapter Two

ASHLEY TURNED and looked towards the stone fireplace where a cozy fire was burning. There were two high-backed chairs that faced the fire and that was where Lang had been sitting.

Her breath caught as she saw him in the flesh. He was a very attractive man in his late thirties with a muscular build. His hair was dark and showed touches of gray at his temples. When he smiled at her, there were slight dimples on either side of his face.

All of these features were very alluring, but it was his eyes that really caught her attention. If she had not known he was blind, she would never have dreamed he couldn't see.

Those blue eyes of his seemed as if they could see right through her and into her soul.

Hello, Ms. Randall. It's nice to finally meet you. I'm Anthony Lang. He held out a hand, which she crossed the room to shake. Thank you for coming.

It's wonderful to meet you, too, Mr. Lang.

Oh please, call me Anthony. Mr. Lang makes me feel either terribly old or a lot more important than I actually am. They laughed and then he invited her to sit in one of the chairs by the fire.

As Ashley drank her coffee and warmed up from the evening chill, she and Anthony got better acquainted. He also outlined in further detail what he would require of her as his assistant.

The more Anthony talked, the more excited Ashley became about her new job. He understood that she was trying to break into the writing world and he promised to help her in any way that he could.

She really liked this man, she suddenly realized. He was intelligent, funny, and professional all at once.
