Authority is defined as the right to control, determine or command. This is what God gave to Adam and Eve in the beginning, and this same authority is what Jesus died to provide for every believer. Before we can take authority over spiritual things, we must first take authority over the things we deal with in the natural, things such as our time, our finances and our health to name a few.

Introduction

Authority is defined as the right to control, command or determine. Authority is the first thing God gave mankind before we were ever brought into the world. He gave us authority before He gave us a job, or our families. God gave us authority before He made our natural bodies. For centuries people have abused this authority by seeking to dominate others, but this was never God’s intention. Genesis 1:26 says, And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Notice God gave us dominion over everything except for humanity, which tells us He never intended for man to dominate man. Just look throughout history and we will see how whenever one group sought to dominate another, lives were destroyed and humanity was negatively impacted. Slavery was never God’s intention. God’s desire is that all of His children rule in life and not just a select few. Each of us has been given authority to dominate our world and the challenges we will face.

We are spirit beings who possess souls, living inside a natural body. Our authority exists in the spirit realm and supersedes everything in the natural. Knowing this, why is it so many believers fail to walk in the authority we have been given? Satan, our enemy, loves to keep God’s people ignorant to the fact that we have the same authority as Jesus. When a people are ignorant of something, it means they are lacking in knowledge or information. Hosea 4:6 says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. It is what we do not know that can hurt us and keep us from receiving God’s best for our lives. Thank God, those days are over!

The Authority of the Believer

Police officers are some of the most recognizable authority figures within our society. Whenever they walk into a room, their very presence commands respect. They wear a gun which is their power, and a uniform, which is a sign of their authority. If they were to command everyone to sit down, as long as they were wearing their uniform, everyone would comply because they recognize the officer has the authority to do so. Each officer receives authority from local municipalities, which get their authority from the states they represent, which gets their authority from the federal government. This means there are three different levels backing one police officer. This is a natural example of the authority believers have within the earth.

Everyone who receives Christ has been given spiritual authority and power, enabling us to operate within this natural world. The power of every believer is the Holy Spirit, and we get our authority from Jesus, who received His authority from God the Father. Scripture says, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me (Matt. 28:18 NIV). Notice He said all authority in heaven and on earth, which means Jesus’ authority supersedes that of angels, demons, and everything within this natural world. This knowledge should give every born-again believer confidence to remove every limitation and fear and get busy spreading the gospel.
