Introduction

Jesus, Deliverer of the Brokenhearted is the second book in a series I am writing on Mind Renewing Healing Prayer. While my first book, Jesus, Healer of the Brokenhearted, provides the reader with a foundational understanding of the essential principles of Mind Renewing Healing Prayer, this book focuses primarily on how mental strongholds are fashioned in the mind and the role of the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process in dismantling and tearing them down. We will also discover how and when to utilize deliverance prayer in the context of the mind renewal process. This book is not meant to be a comprehensive book on deliverance; instead, it is meant to serve as a companion piece that addresses these topics in the context of Mind Renewing Healing Prayer.

Part One, focuses on how I see the ways that demonic spirits gain inroads as a result of our brokenness and how to effectively minister to the demonized in the healing prayer process. I often see people looking for a quick fix to their brokenness and seeking deliverance for life issues that primarily require healing. This section focuses on how I see demonic issues that need to be addressed in the healing prayer process. In later chapters, I discuss how the demonic is connected to lie-based thinking and other issues that require a deliverance intervention in order to bring wholeness.

Part Two, the major portion of this book, focuses on my theory of how the layers of mental strongholds develop and are intricately woven together, building and holding a mental stronghold in place. This is the soil in which our lie-based beliefs are planted, cultivated, and grow. These are the building materials that surround our lie-based beliefs, holding our lies in place, that need to be addressed and dismantled in the healing prayer process. However, this book will focus on how demonization is intertwined, thus reinforcing and strengthening the fabric of a mental stronghold. I believe this is important in understanding how strongholds are formed and reinforced as well as the demonic's role in holding the stronghold in place. As we understand the demonic's role in building strongholds in the mind, it helps us understand the keys to dismantle the layers of a stronghold through the power of the Holy Spirit, in the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process. We will also learn when a direct deliverance prayer and intervention needs to take place.

Part Three, details how we use Mind Renewing Healing Prayer as the primary weapon to tear down strongholds, uproot the places demonic spirits gain a foothold and bring Jesus' truth to lie-based beliefs. We will also learn specific prayers of deliverance in order to dismantle their hold.

As a Christian and a licensed clinical social worker with over 40 years' experience, this book is written from both biblical and experiential perspectives. In this regard, it is meant to be both theologically sound and practically oriented.

My first book, Jesus, Healer of the Brokenhearted, gives a detailed account of the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process, which is rooted in Theophostic Healing Prayer principles from which I have been seeing great inner healing take place since 1999. What I now call Mind Renewing Healing Prayer is a healing process in which the central theme is how ones’ lie-based thinking impacts our whole lives in detrimental ways. It assumes that the core problems in life come not just from faulty thinking, but from what I call lie-based, core foundational beliefs. These are beliefs that are interpreted in the context of our childhood hurts and wounds. Once the lie is set in place, the lie becomes the lenses from which we see, interpret, and ultimately live our lives. Mind Renewing Healing Prayer is a powerful, spiritled, inner-healing process. In Jesus, Deliverer of the Brokenhearted, I focus on when and how deliverance is indicated in the context of Mind Renewing Healing Prayer.

I am thankful for the impact Dr. Ed Smith and his Theophostic Healing Prayer Principles have had on my life and my ministry. This book was written from my own experience and perspective. I sat down and wrote about what I do for a year just out of my head, putting what I do into my own language. The first two books so far have come out of that material. There will be several more in the coming years, God willing. However, you will see throughout this book Theophostic themes and principles which have greatly impacted my thinking—the duality of the two parts of the mind, free will and choice, Jesus communicating truth to our lie-based beliefs, as well as the hindrances to healing, primarily anger that blocks the healing process. Also, triggered emotions lead us to our lie-based beliefs in past memories. While there are some variations in some of my views today, I want to give credit to Ed Smith’s major contribution to the healing prayer community and to me personally. I have referenced these similarities throughout the book as they are a part of what I now call Mind Renewing Healing Prayer.

There are several stories of healing throughout the book. In all stories, the names have been changed; and some stories are compilations of stories where I have seen God bring healing countless times. In some places, the scriptures are underlined for emphasis but the underlining’s are not a part of the original text.

Prayer Declaration Over All Readers: (Prayerfully declare this out loud, in agreement with me.)

I declare that You, oh Lord, would open the hearts and minds of all who open this book and read these pages and that You would reveal Your truth. (John 16:13) May You open the eyes of their hearts and illuminate their minds. May they have the Spirit of wisdom and revelation of who You are and may they have a deep revelation of who they are in Christ. (Ephesians 1:17-20)

I ask that You would reveal to them the strategies that the kingdom of darkness has fashioned against them. I declare that no weapon formed against them would prosper and every lying tongue that has risen or will rise up against them will be shown to be in the wrong. (Isaiah 54:17) I bind the spirits of darkness operating through their brokenness, generational curses, sin, and deception. May all the strategies fashioned against them be exposed and may the God of peace crush Satan under their feet in Jesus’ name! (Romans 16:20)

I ask that You would unravel and dismantle all the layers of their strongholds, that their lie-based, core-foundational lies would be exposed, revealed, and dismantled, and that they would receive a deep revelation of truth. I ask that You would unleash your supernatural weapons of warfare that are mighty before God for the tearing down of strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) Your Word says that no weapon formed against them would prosper, and I declare every lying tongue that rises up against You would be shown to be in the wrong.

Lord, I submit each reader into Your protection and care, and I ask that You would put the whole Armor of God on them according to Ephesians 6:10-18. I also ask that You would surround them with a hedge of protection and warring and ministering angels to protect, war on their behalf, and minister to them in Jesus’ name according to Hebrews 1:14; Psalm 91; Psalm 34:7; Psalm 103:20-21.

I pray that You would reveal to and clothe them with their Kingdom Identity and release them into their Kingdom Destiny! (Ephesians 2:10; Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 139:13-16) I ask that You would prophetically reveal all the days that are written in their book and that they would fully walk in their destiny. (Psalm 139:16)

I ask that You would fulfill Your mandate for each of them and heal the brokenhearted; proclaim liberty to the captives; set the captives free; comfort all who mourn; give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they would be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that You would be glorified in each of them in Jesus’ name! (Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:16-21)

    JESUS, DELIVERER

    _________

    CHAPTER 1

    FOUNDATIONS

    Mind Renewing Healing Prayer

What you’re after is truth from the inside out. Enter me, then; conceive a new, true life.

    Psalm 51:6 (MSG)

Healing Principle: God does not just want us to have more information but a revelation that leads to transformation.

We are all broken, wounded and crippled by sin in the world and in need of the full measure of the Lord’s salvation. The greatest news of all time, is that God provided a wonderful pathway to bring us back to Him.

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

    John 3:16 (MSG)

God sent His Son Jesus, who died on the cross, paying the price for our sins, 2,000 years ago. Jesus shed His blood, taking the consequence and bearing the punishment for our sin upon His sinless body, for us, God’s precious children. As a result, we are free to choose to receive the free gift of eternal life. Sozo, the Greek word for salvation, means He fully intends for us to receive the full measure of His salvation, which means, not only eternal life but also healed and delivered.

UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE

My first book, Jesus Healer of the Brokenhearted, was written for those who want to discover how God heals His children’s wounded, broken areas using the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process. Jesus, Deliverer of the Brokenhearted, is a companion piece that will help you understand how to effectively deal with demonization and understand when deliverance is indicated and how to effectively deal with them in the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process.

Unless the Lord builds the house,

    the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the guards stand watch in vain.

    Psalm 127:1 (NIV)

However, as the primary focus of this book, I will share in detail about how mental strongholds are built and fashioned in the mind, as a result of early childhood abuse, hurts and wounds. We will address how demonic spirits subtly and directly are interwoven into the fabric, the building material of an evolving mental stronghold. You cannot tear down a mental stronghold unless you understand how they are set in place. Most importantly, I will identify how we can, co-laboring with Jesus, tear down mental strongholds in the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process and find freedom and breakthrough in your life!

In the first chapter, I will share about the wonderful healing that only the Lord can bring through the finished work of the resurrected Christ. I want to lay a foundation and share about the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process as I will refer to it throughout the book. (See my first book, Jesus, Healer of the Brokenhearted, for more information about the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process.)

In Part 1, I will define an overview of the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process; and I will detail the specific ways the demonic gains legal access through our brokenness and lie-based beliefs, thus hindering our healing journey. I will discuss how and when demonic issues need to be addressed in the healing prayer process.

In Part 2 and primary part of the book, I will l detail the layers of mental strongholds, how they are formed in the mind and defended in order to hold the lie-based beliefs in place, how to dismantle them, and how demonic spirits gain entrance and are interwoven into the layers of the stronghold, hindering our freedom.

In Part 3 of the book, I will detail the actual Mind Renewing Healing Prayer, the healing process that I have been privileged to join with the Lord in facilitating the tearing down and dismantling of our mental strongholds for many years. This is primarily accomplished by revealing truth to our lie-based thinking.1 I will also detail my personal experience and scriptural understanding of how and when deliverance is indicated in the context of the Mind Renewing Healing Prayer process.

In the remainder of the book, I will discuss the deliverance aspect of Sozo in the context of the healing prayer process and how to successfully dismantle lie-based thinking in Jesus’ name and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

    MIND RENEWING HEALING PRAYER

Mind Renewing Healing Prayer—a Spirit-led and Christ-centered approach that through mind renewal facilitates marvelous healing and breakthrough.

What is Mind Renewing Healing Prayer? Some might think it sounds like a mystical concept. However, anyone using inner-healing prayer approaches simply believes that a powerful, supernatural God desires to heal and restore His people emotionally and renew their minds, as He promised in the Bible.

Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.

    Romans 12:2 (TPT)

Note that as I refer to Mind Renewing Healing Prayer throughout Jesus, Deliverer of the Brokenhearted, I want to make clear that memories really do not need to be healed. What occurred in our past has already happened and cannot be changed? What needs to be healed or renewed is the mind’s interpretation of those events, our lie-based thinking, internalized in our past memories. As the Lord reveals His Truth, as we process through past memories to our lie-based beliefs during the healing prayer session, the pain leaves and symptoms subside. The lie-based thinking is replaced with God’s truth. In that way, healing does occur.

The healing concepts I will share actually flow together simply, are easy to comprehend, and are quite natural. That is how the Lord does things. Inner healing prayer also includes believing that God can do far more than we could ever imagine. God is not limited to our preconceptions of how people are emotionally healed.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.

    Ephesians 3:20

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice and I have been a mental health professional since 1980. I am the founder of the Meadows Healing Prayer Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. I have been privileged to see thousands of traumatic memories completely healed and the oppressed and broken set free through the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name. I am also a psychotherapist at Christian Psychotherapy Services in Chesapeake, Virginia, where I have been a therapist and former clinical counseling director since 1989. In my professional journey, I have always been seeking to bring the Lord into the counseling, healing process by utilizing prayer, scripture, and inviting the Holy Spirit into the therapeutic process. I have always felt there was more that Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, wanted to do that Christian Counseling alone could not accomplish. I believe in and practice Christian Counseling and do not mean to diminish it as it certainly has its place and blesses many. Even in college and graduate school in the 1970s and early 1980s, I remember reading about inner-healing prayer. I read Dr. David Seamonds’, Healing for Damaged Emotions, as well as other authors who the Lord had given insight into the supernatural realm of emotional inner healing. Although intrigued, I never thought God would use me to minister supernaturally to His people. Did you ever notice how the Lord telegraphs or gives us glimpses of the things He calls us to? It always made sense to me that God still wants to dramatically transform those who have been emotionally wounded. Isn’t our God a supernatural God?

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Isn’t He the same yesterday, today and forever? Scripture says that God is our healer, Jehovah-Rapha,2 the Jehovah who heals (Jeremiah 30:17; Isaiah 30:26; Isaiah 61:1; Psalm 103:3); and it also says that greater works than these will we do, so His power has to still be relevant and active today; and I testify without reservation that it is!

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

    John 14:12

Over the years, my searching and openness to wanting more of God’s healing power in the counseling, healing process continued. I went to various seminars and training to learn more.

I am very grateful for the groundwork that many have laid over the years, that was being used by God in pioneering inner healing prayer and mind renewal. However, even though I gleaned useful concepts from different places and integrated some concepts into my counseling and healing repertoire, I was unable to find something that worked well for me.

In 1999, that all changed when I was introduced to the teachings of Dr. Ed Smith who is an ordained Southern Baptist Minister and Christian Counselor. Dr. Smith and I were on the same healing journey. He was seeking, as I was, to bring his clients into a deeper, biblical, healing encounter with the Spirit of God in his counseling practice. He was frustrated, as was I, in finding only what he called tolerable recovery instead of total healing of the emotional wounds that people suffered from or a resolution of their symptoms. I could understand where a person had lie-based and faulty thinking; and I could even communicate the truth to them, yet people were still struggling to be free and to grasp in their hearts what they intellectually believed to be true. For instance, one may know intellectually that their sins are forgiven, but still live in guilt, shame, and condemnation.

During our formative years, we all experience wounding from various hurts in life. Unfortunately, we internalize these beliefs and they become a part of our core belief system. As lie-based thinking is set in place, the stage is set for the development of a mental stronghold.

3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

    2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NIV)

    I define a stronghold as:

    1. God’s Word: A belief that is not in line with God’s truth, the Bible.

    2. Objective Reality: A belief that does not line up with objective reality.

A belief that develops into a stronghold needs a divine power encounter, a freeing touch from Heaven in order to be demolished. In terms of emotional healing, when we internalize and believe a lie about our life or who we are as a person that is contrary to God’s Word, we will walk in defeat and bondage. We will struggle with unnecessary problems and emotional symptoms like depression, anxiety, unworthiness, shame, and self-contempt. The degree of bondage parallels the degree of a person’s woundedness and the depth of the internalized lie-based thinking.

Unfortunately, we can know intellectually or logically the truth, yet not be free as we have not internalized it at the core experiential belief level rooted in those early memory experiences. A wounded believer in Christ can know and understand the biblical concepts about their true identity in Christ. However, they can intellectually believe it and still not fully grasp the concepts in the core of their being because of these early wounds.

WE LIVE AND REACT FROM OUR CORE BELIEFS

That is why it is important for us to deal with our past hurts and to seek and allow the Lord to renew our minds. I am totally convinced that God wants to reveal Himself to us in the deep places of our hearts. We need the supernatural weapons of
