Some Practical Advice for Intercessors: How to be Effective in Your Health

    Bibliography

    INTRODUCTION

T he main motivating factor I had for wanting to write a guide for intercessors was that I was searching for this type of information myself, and I couldn’t find anything that would satisfy my own inquiries. However, in my search, I was able to see just how large a variety of guides for other types of journeys did exist.

For example, if you wanted to embark on a weight loss journey, there are a thousand and one guides that will teach you how to accomplish this task. If you wanted to tone up your arms, there are many books that will provide routines to show you, step by step, how to do it. You will find the same thing if you want to learn a new language, or even how to become a better chef. For these journeys, and many others, a reliable guide is readily available.

So, when I was researching information regarding a prayer journey book that could guide me on a day to day basis, and allow me to concentrate on a specific purpose in my journey, I was surprised that the marketplace had very scarce resources.

I was also persuaded to write this material because of the enormous confusion I encountered during my own beginning years as an intercessor. At that time, there were so many different types of spiritual methods and strategies of warfare that it became extremely difficult to adequately manage these spiritual weapons in an effective manner.

As I stated before, I spent many years trying to find written materials that would explain all the things that Christians need to know in order to become effective intercessors. I searched in vain for something substantive that would identify all the weapons of spiritual warfare I had available as an intercessor, how to operate in them, and when they should be utilized to make my prayer sessions more effective.

Since I was unable to locate this type of material, I then decided to dedicate my efforts to studying, investigating, and asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate my path in that direction. I did this with the goal of someday writing a book that would better facilitate the work of the intercessor and the entire Body of Christ. This information would prevent others from going through the same struggles that I did and would enable them to learn how to manage the spiritual armaments that God has given to His Church.

However, I must give all merit and credit to the revelations of the Holy Spirit, because the great majority of the revealed contents in this book were given to me by Him.

By the way, the concepts in this book are all new concepts, such as categorizing and teaching the different types of prayer that exist and the different types of strategies used in spiritual warfare.

I have several ultimate goals for this book. The first goal is that it might shed light upon the lives of believers so they might know the great importance of prayer. I also want to be sure that through this guide, one could really get to know their true identity in God. Lastly, I hope to make it truly clear that prayer is not just a gift, but a discipline to follow on a daily basis.

In crafting this book, my intent is to clarify and place in order the different concepts of spiritual warfare that exist, and instruct the reader how to operate in them. In doing this, I will have accomplished my objective in edifying, equipping, instructing, empowering, motivating, and guiding the Body of Christ into the marvelous and exciting world of intersession.

WHAT DO THESE JOURNEYS CONSIST OF?

For many years, the Christian church has stated that prayer is a very necessary act in the lives of Christians and should be practiced in the lives of all believers. However, this powerful practice was often looked upon as a boring and monotonous routine. It even got to the point where many believers considered prayer services as the most boring services of all.

However, thanks to the wonderful revelations of the Holy Spirit, in today’s world, we are able to enjoy prayer encounters that are much more dynamic and filled with the presence of God. We can also make particularly good use of the many different types of prayer and all their benefits, which have been made available to the entire Body of Christ.

Before we begin, it is important to clarify that no one type of prayer is better than another. They are all enormously powerful spiritual weapons of war, if and when they are utilized for the proper objectives. The key factors depend on what kind of difficult situation we are going through, the actual purpose of our prayer petition, and the dimension of the spiritual attacks we are facing at the time.

It is also important to note that all of our weapons of spiritual warfare are destined toward the same objective. This objective is to move the hand of God in our favor and to undo all the evil works of the kingdom of darkness. It is also to make good use of the authority that God has placed within us to produce some positive change in people, nations, ministries, or circumstances.

In my book Clash Between Two Kingdoms,¹ I give a detailed description of each different type of prayer and show you how to utilize them more effectively. My main objective in this book is to guide you in using your abilities in this field of intersession prayer and put what you have learned to good practice. I also hope that it may cause favorable changes in your own life, the lives of your family members, your ministry, your nation, or even your own particular circumstances. It is also important that this guide serves as a practical directory for those who wish to pray more effectively over their own circumstances and receive answers when they pray.

THE TYPES OF PRAYER TO UTILIZE

It is certainly not a new thing to use the many different types of prayer. In fact, we can observe this trend all the way back to biblical times, from people like Isaac, King David, Moses, Jacob, and many more. They all made good use of these different types of prayer in order to unbind, to accelerate, or to seal their answers to their prayer petitions. However, what is new is the idea of placing a name on each of the different types of prayer, and knowing which one to apply to our given circumstances.

The concept that is used to name each type of prayer is similar to the one used to identify military weapons. Just as in the natural world where all military weapons are not used for the same purpose, so it is in the spirit world that not all standard prayers fit the need of all the different variables of our circumstances. In other words, in the spirit world, all the spiritual weapons have particular functions and specific situations in which they should be used.

To explain a bit further, each type of prayer is designed for a specific situation or type of spiritual attack that concerns the person praying. Just like in the natural world, one can combine these spiritual weapons of warfare to better reach the objective through strategic use of these different types of prayer. And just like in the natural world, different types of spiritual weapons are used for the different magnitudes of the battle that one is facing.

A clear example of what we are trying to convey may be found in the book of Psalms, chapter 55. Here we see King David raising his prayer petition to God, and making excellent use of various types of prayer (all in one prayer setting), with the final goal of unleashing and receiving his answer.

We can see how King David begins his prayer with a powerful one, known as the prayer of supplication, when he prays (and I quote), Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught at the voice of my enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me (Psalm 55:1-4).

In these verses, we can see how King David begins to present his case before the Lord through his attitude of surrender and supplication. But within the same prayer, King David then makes a strategic spiritual switch from his prayer of supplication to the prayer of warfare, in which he says, Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it. Destructive forces are at work within the city; threats and lies never leave its streets (Psalm 55:9-11).

Here we see how King David tells God what he would like Him to do to his enemies. So, King David had changed his attitude from one of supplication to one of authority and warfare. As we continue to read on, we see yet another change of spiritual strategy. King David now changes his prayer of warfare to a prayer of appeal when he says, If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God (Psalm 55:12-14).

In these verses, King David appeals his case before God by exposing the betrayal of a friend, and he places the whole situation before God’s throne. By doing this, King David is placing the balance of justice in the hands of the only true Judge, who also happens to be the Judge over all the earth. He hopes to persuade God to recognize his good conduct, highlighting the level of responsibility which David held in the story of betrayal. With this strategy, King David’s final objective was to have God rule in his favor and against that of his enemy.

Surprisingly enough, King David continues further in his prayer and he uses yet another sharp weapon of spiritual warfare known as prophetic intercession. King David began to decree things over his enemies that he wanted to be established upon them when he said, Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them (Psalm 55:15).

Moving forward, we observe King David making more decrees using the same powerful weapon of prophetic intercession. However, this time he uses it to decree good and favorable things over his own life when he says, But I call to God, and the Lord saves me. God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them – men who never change their ways and have no fear of God (Psalm 55:16,19).

What we see in these verses is King David prophesying victory over his situation, speaking of things that had not happened yet, and calling them all into existence, so they could be established before the Lord.

Lastly, King David finishes off his prayer against the kingdom of darkness, with a powerful and lethal spiritual blow through a spiritual weapon known as worshiping in advance. King David says, "Cast your cares on the Lord
