IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE PROPHETS POSSESS A STRENGTH THAT surpasses the prevailing forces of the world. The 1930s introduces us to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian, pastor, and prophet who embodied resilient strength and conviction amidst Hitler’s oppressive regime during World War II. In the face of unimaginable darkness, Bonhoeffer declared, This must be stronger than that—a resounding principle that reverberates through the corridors of time. Today, as prophets, we are invited to rise and confront the challenges of our era.

As a prophet myself, I have been deeply captivated by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s story. His passion and courage have been a source of inspiration and challenge for me. In echoing his statement—This must be stronger than that—I am reminded of the weightiness of my call and the need for prophetic strength in today’s world.

The Finkenwalders: A Community Shaped by Conviction

In the 1930s, as the Nazi regime’s influence grew, Dietrich Bonhoeffer recognised the need to train and equip individuals who would resist the regime’s ideology and promote a genuine Christian faith. To this end, he established an illegal seminary known as Finkenwalde. This seminary became a refuge for young theologians and pastors who gathered to study, pray, and live in community. The Finkenwalders, under Bonhoeffer’s leadership and guidance, engaged in rigorous spiritual formation with a strong emphasis on discipleship, spiritual growth, and an uncompromising and radical commitment to following Christ.

The Finkenwalders played a crucial role in shaping the faith and convictions of its students, ultimately inspiring them to resist the Nazi regime and uphold the values of truth, justice, and compassion. Bonhoeffer recognised the necessity for the Finkenwalders to be stronger than the prevailing forces of their time. They had to be spiritually fortified, equipped with unyielding strength and commitment to stand against the oppressive regime.

However, concerns were raised by Bonhoeffer’s friends and other Christians about the intensity of the seminary training. They questioned whether such a high level of commitment was necessary and feared potential burnout and alienation from national leadership.

Undeterred by the scepticism, Bonhoeffer remained firm in his conviction. He believed that the Finkenwalders needed to be stronger than the prevailing forces of the times they lived in, including the Nazi regime. Bonhoeffer’s determination led him to take a pivotal step, bringing his friend, Wilhelm Niesel, to a hilltop overlooking Hitler’s training camp. From there, Bonhoeffer shared his insights on the necessity of superior discipline to defeat the Nazis. He challenged his generation of believers and leaders to be stronger than the tormentors they encountered daily.

The Power of Conviction

Bonhoeffer’s actions encapsulate the power of persistent conviction. In a world filled with compromise and conformity, it is essential for prophets to cling steadfastly to the principles and teachings of the kingdom of God. Bonhoeffer’s profound statement, This must be stronger than that, underscores his understanding that the core principles of the Christian faith ought to take precedence over personal desires, societal norms, or political pressures.

His steadfast conviction serves as a reminder that, as prophets of Jesus Christ, we are called to prioritise fidelity to God’s truth above all else. In the face of challenges and opposition, it is crucial to remain resolute, upholding the values of love, justice, and righteousness.

Jon Tyson said it so well in his book The Beautiful Resistance.

Should we just give up and capitulate to the powers of our time? Should we sit by while our faith is taken captive by political and ideological forces? Should we avert our eyes while mammon wreaks havoc on our hearts? Should we watch twenty million young people leave the church in our generation? A million a year give up on faith.

Is it possible to build community in such a way that though it is small, generations to come will look back on our faithfulness in a generation of compromise?

So, we must call our generation to loyalty to Christ. We must live with devotion and conviction regardless of what they cost us. This must be stronger than that.

Recognising the Urgency of the Times

Prophets are not passive observers of the world; they are spiritually sensitive and discerning of the times and seasons they live in. Throughout history, pivotal moments have arisen when societal, cultural, and spiritual landscapes demand the presence and voices of prophets. These are times of upheaval, transition, and pressing need for divine guidance and intervention. The shifting tides of human experience, whether marked by injustice, moral decay, or spiritual hunger, create a space where prophets emerge as conduits of God’s wisdom and truth.

Just as Moses, Daniel, Nehemiah, and other biblical figures were summoned, leading to the shaping of the spiritual climate of their times, prophets today are likewise called to respond to the pressing needs of their generation. They are called to be the voice of God amidst chaos, confusion, and moral decay. Therefore, their role is to, with clarity and authority, provide direction, challenge the status quo, and offer a vision of hope amidst the darkness. The times themselves have become a resounding call, a collective cry, for prophetic voices to illuminate the path forward, confront prevailing forces, and deliver messages that call for repentance, transformation, and restoration.

The hot question is, Should we then continue with the way things have been and allow the powers of our time destroy us? I know I am not the only one feeling the need for the church and, particularly, the prophets to rise up to the call for such a time.

The Challenges and Resistance Faced by Prophets

Prophets often encounter misunderstanding, ridicule, and attempts to silence their voices. Their message is often countercultural and challenges the prevailing ideologies and powers. However, prophets are fuelled by an assignment, conviction, and passion that come directly from God, making them unstoppable in fulfilling their purpose. Throughout history, prophets have faced opposition and rejection, yet they remained undeterred in their pursuit of God’s calling.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s own experiences serve as a testament to the trials faced by prophets, even in our time. In a world captivated by political and ideological forces, where faith is at risk of being taken captive and compromise abounds, prophets are called to build communities rooted in uncompromising loyalty to Christ. They must live with devotion and conviction, regardless of the personal cost, in order to establish a foundation stronger than the prevailing forces of the times.
